Chapter 8

The first pale rays of morning light filtered through the stained-glass windows of the Sterling mansion, casting long, peaceful shadows across the grand foyer. The frantic chaos of the night before had been replaced by the steady, efficient presence of law enforcement and corporate security specialists. Uniformed officers moved quietly through the corridors, collecting evidence, reviewing logs, and securing the perimeter. The arrested mercenary had been transported to a high-security detention facility, and the digital drive recovered from the garage was currently being decrypted by Mark’s lead cybersecurity engineer in the study.

In the second-floor nursery, Julian was finally fast asleep in his bed, the heavy curtains drawn to block the bright morning sun. Clara sat in the armchair beside him, keeping a quiet, watchful vigil while sipping a cup of warm tea. She looked exhausted, but a profound sense of relief rested in her features.

Downstairs, Mark stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling windows of his private office, staring out across the immaculately manicured lawn. The events of the past twenty-four hours had aged him visibly, yet his posture was straight, his resolve hardened into unbreakable steel. The decrypted files from the seized drive had provided the smoking gun he needed: a comprehensive ledger of embezzled funds, illegal shell companies, and internal sabotage orchestrated by Arthur Pendelton with the active complicity of three sitting members of the Sterling board of directors.

A soft knock broke his concentration. The door opened, and David Vance, Mark’s longtime legal counsel and most trusted confidant, stepped into the room. David looked grave, holding a thick leather folder containing the morning briefing.

"The authorities have executed the search warrants on Pendelton’s primary residence and the shell offices downtown," David reported, his voice measured. "Three members of your board—Higgins, Vance, and Miller—have been detained for questioning regarding corporate espionage and conspiracy. It appears Vivienne was their primary liaison, tasked with infiltrating your household to secure guardianship and manipulate the family trust."

"And Vivienne herself?" Mark asked without turning around.

"She attempted to catch a private flight out of the municipal airstrip at dawn," David replied. "Federal marshals intercepted her before she could board. She’s currently in custody, refusing to speak without legal representation."

Mark finally turned away from the window, walking slowly toward his desk. "Let her rely on her lawyers. They won't be able to punch through the mountain of financial and physical evidence we've handed over to the district attorney. Every single person involved in this conspiracy will face the full weight of the law."

"What about the company, Mark?" David asked cautiously. "The news of the board arrests will break by noon. Stock prices will fluctuate."

"Let them fluctuate," Mark said firmly. "Transparency is the only way forward. We purge the rot completely, even if it hurts in the short term. I will not have my son grow up in an empire built on hidden filth and betrayal."
