Chapter 8 - The Brass Key

The heavy brass key sat on the nightstand, catching the faint amber glow of the bedside lamp. Jonathan stared down at the jagged metal teeth, a cold dread washing over him. The design was unfamiliar, yet it bore the distinct, heavy weight of an antique security lock—the kind used for high-security storage vaults rather than household furniture.

"Where did you find this?" Jonathan asked, his voice barely audible over the hum of the bedside monitor.

"In the lining of Clara’s jewelry box, hidden beneath a false bottom," Martha replied, keeping her voice low so as not to wake Evelyn. "Along with a set of bank account statements from an offshore branch in the Cayman Islands. The account was opened three days before Eleanor’s fatal fall."

Jonathan picked up the key. It felt unnaturally cold against his skin. "An offshore account? Clara didn't have that kind of capital when we married. Even her previous divorce settlement barely covered her wardrobe."

"She didn't fund it alone," Martha said grimly, crossing her arms over her dark navy blue shirt. "Someone else was bankrolling her entry into this family. Someone who wanted control of the Vance estate just as badly as she did—and who knew every single security blind spot in this mansion."

Before Jonathan could process the terrifying implications of Martha’s words, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the hallway outside the nursery. It sounded like the latch of a window being forced open against the midnight draft.

Jonathan motioned for Martha to stay back. He stepped silently toward the nursery door, his hand closing tightly around the heavy brass key like a makeshift weapon. He twisted the doorknob with agonizing slowness and pulled the door open an inch.

The hallway was pitch black. The automated wall sconces had mysteriously shut off, plunging the corridor into absolute darkness. But through the shadows, Jonathan spotted a tall, dark silhouette standing motionless directly outside the master bedroom door—the very room where Eleanor had tragically fallen to her death three months ago.

"Who's there?" Jonathan demanded, stepping out into the hallway with his voice cutting like a whip.

The silhouette did not run. Instead, it slowly turned around, holding a familiar brown paper shopping bag in its hands. As the distant lightning flashed through the high arched window, the stranger’s face was briefly illuminated, revealing an identity that made Jonathan's blood run completely ice cold.
