Chapter 7 - Whispers in the Nursery

The heavy oak door of the upstairs nursery creaked open, letting a sliver of warm hallway light cut across the plush carpet. Martha sat quietly in the rocking chair by the window, softly humming an old lullaby. Little Evelyn lay curled up beneath a heavy quilt, her breathing slow and even, though occasional remnants of dried tears still stained her flushed cheeks.

Jonathan stepped into the room, his movements hesitant, almost like a man walking across a field of landmines. He knelt beside the rocking chair, his hands trembling as he rested them on Martha’s knees.

"Is she asleep?" Jonathan asked, his voice strained and barely above a whisper.

"She finally drifted off ten minutes ago," Martha replied softly, her silver-grey hair catching the dim lamplight. She looked down at Jonathan with eyes filled with a mixture of pity and stern warning. "You heard what Clara said before they took her away, didn't you?"

Jonathan swallowed hard, running a hand through his dark hair. "She implied... she claimed she told Evelyn something before we caught her in the conservatory. Martha, what if Clara poisoned her mind? What if she told her something monstrous about Eleanor?"

"Children don't process malice the way adults do, Jonathan," Martha said gently, placing a weathered hand over his trembling fingers. "Evelyn is resilient, but she is still a toddler. If Clara planted a seed of terror in that little head, it won't show up as anger. It will show up in the dark."

Jonathan stood up slowly and walked over to the crib. He gently brushed a stray curl of hair from his daughter's forehead. Evelyn stirred slightly, her tiny brow furrowing as a soft whimper escaped her lips. She tossed her head from side to side, her small fingers twitching against the blanket as if pushing something away.

"She's dreaming about it," Jonathan whispered, a knot tightening in his chest. "She's reliving the greenhouse."

"Not just the greenhouse," Martha said, standing up and walking toward the door. She paused, casting a long look back at the room. "There's a reason Clara wasn't afraid of being caught, Jonathan. People like her always have a backup plan. And I found something in Clara's private dressing room while the police were searching downstairs."

Jonathan turned sharply, his heart skipping a beat. "What did you find, Martha?"

Martha reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, old-fashioned brass key with a jagged tip, placing it silently on the wooden nightstand.
