Chapter 2 - The Echo of the Will

The heavy thud of the legal document echoing against the glass table sent a shiver through the humid air of the conservatory. Clara stared down at the cream-colored parchment, her carefully manicured fingers twitching nervously against the handle of her silver shears. The bold letterhead of Jonathan’s primary estate attorneys stared back at her, mocking her sudden display of dominance.

"What is the meaning of this insolence, Martha?" Clara forced her voice to remain steady, though a tremor betrayed her fragile composure. She took a slow step backward, her vibrant red dress rustling against the fern leaves.

Martha did not flinch. She kept one protective arm securely wrapped around little Evelyn, who continued to sniffle softly into the fabric of Martha’s navy blue shirt. The older woman’s silver-grey hair caught the afternoon light, framing a face chiseled from decades of unwavering loyalty to the estate’s true bloodline.

"You thought you won the moment the dirt settled over poor Eleanor's casket, didn't you?" Martha’s voice was a low, dangerous growl. "You assumed Jonathan’s grief made him blind. But a grieving father doesn't sign away his daughter’s birthright to a gold-digger in a rented red dress."

Clara laughed, a high, brittle sound that lacked any real warmth. "Jonathan is my husband now. Everything he owns legally belongs to the household we share. That child is nothing more than a lingering reminder of a mistake he is desperate to forget."

"Read the damn paper, Clara," Martha commanded, her eyes narrowing into slits.

Clara hesitated, then stepped forward. Her eyes scanned the first few paragraphs. The blood drained entirely from her face, leaving her lips stark white. The document explicitly stated that the entire estate, including the glasshouse and the family trust, was held in an irrevocable custodianship exclusively for Evelyn. Clara was merely a temporary resident with zero legal claim to the assets.

"This... this is fabricated," Clara stammered, dropping the paper as if it burned her flesh. "Jonathan would never sign such a trap."

Before Martha could deliver the final, crushing blow, the heavy glass doors swung open once more, and a cold voice cut through the tense silence.

"I signed every single word of it, Clara."

Clara whipped her head around, her eyes widening in sheer terror as Jonathan stepped out of the shadows, holding a sealed envelope marked with the police crest.
