Chapter 3 - Shadows in the Conservatory

Jonathan stood at the threshold of the conservatory, his silhouette framed by the encroaching twilight. His tailored suit was slightly rumpled, his dark eyes hollowed out by sleepless nights and a suffocating grief that had recently transformed into something much colder. He did not look at Clara. Instead, his gaze immediately fell upon little Evelyn, who was still resting safely in Martha’s arms.
"Jonathan, thank God," Clara rushed forward, her face instantly twisting into a mask of theatrical distress. She reached out to touch his lapel, batting her eyelashes with practiced sorrow. "Martha has been terrifying the poor baby, spinning wild lies about the estate. You know how hysterical the help can get when they refuse to respect me."
Jonathan gently but firmly pushed Clara’s hands away. The rejection was cold, precise, and absolute. He walked past her as if she were nothing more than a piece of discarded furniture, kneeling directly in front of his trembling daughter.
"Daddy..." Evelyn whispered, her tiny hand reaching out to touch his cheek.
"I'm here, my sweet girl. Daddy is right here," Jonathan murmured, his voice cracking with a raw emotion he rarely showed the world. He pressed a gentle kiss to her knuckles, then looked up at Martha. "Take her upstairs, please. Give her the warm milk with honey. We need to have a very private conversation."
Martha nodded firmly, lifting Evelyn into her arms and carrying her out through the glass doors, casting one final, warning glare over her shoulder at Clara.
Once the doors clicked shut, the temperature in the room dropped significantly. Clara crossed her arms defensively over her vibrant red dress, her nails digging into her own skin.
"You're acting absurd, Jonathan," Clara snapped, breaking the silence first. "Listening to an old servant over your own wife? After everything I've sacrificed to keep this household running?"
Jonathan stood up slowly, towering over her. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, metallic flash drive, placing it gently on the exact spot where the legal document had rested moments earlier.
"You called Martha a servant," Jonathan said quietly, his tone devoid of any inflection. "She raised Eleanor, she raised me, and now she is protecting my daughter from the very person who cut the safety rope on that swing."
Clara’s breath hitched. She took a violent step back, her voice rising in panic. "What are you implying? The child slipped!"
May you like
"Did she?" Jonathan asked softly, plugging the flash drive into the digital monitoring console built into the conservatory wall. A high-definition video feed began to play on the hidden screen, showing every single second of what had happened just twenty minutes prior.
