Chapter 1 - The Broken Sanctuary

The afternoon sunlight filtered through the vast glass panels of the conservatory, casting long, fractured shadows across the tiled floor. Clara stood with a pair of silver shears in her hand, her vibrant red dress stark against the lush greenery. Just a few feet away, little Evelyn sat on her flower-adorned swing, dressed in a cream-colored lace dress with ruffled sleeves, her tiny fingers clutching the woven vines. Clara watched the child with narrowed eyes, her jaw tight as she snipped another stem, letting the blossoms fall carelessly toward the floor.

"You and this ugly toy don't belong here anymore," Clara said coldly, her voice sharp enough to slice through the humid air of the greenhouse.

Evelyn, startled by the harsh tone, shifted her weight. The swing tilted precariously. Before she could catch her balance, the rope slipped, and the toddler tumbled to the floor among the scattered petals, letting out a sudden, frightened wail. Clara did not rush to help. Instead, she stood over the fallen child for a long, agonizing moment before turning her back and walking a few steps away.

Evelyn sat on the cold tiles, tears streaming down her flushed cheeks, her small hands reaching out blindly toward a bruised white rose that had fallen beside her.

Hearing the commotion, Clara whipped back around, her expression hardening into something cruel and unforgiving.

"Your mother is dead," Clara snapped, glaring down at the weeping toddler. "This is my house now."

Before the cruel words could fully settle in the heavy air, the heavy glass doors at the far end of the conservatory flew open with a loud crash. Martha, the elderly housekeeper with silver-grey hair and steady, fierce eyes, stepped inside. She carried a brown paper shopping bag filled with household supplies. The bag slipped from her fingers, hitting the floor with a dull thud, oranges and canned goods rolling across the tiles as she stared at the scene in absolute shock.

Martha’s face contorted with white-hot fury. She did not hesitate. Rushing forward with surprising speed, she dropped to her knees right beside the sobbing toddler. Martha gathered Evelyn into a tight, protective embrace, whispering soothing words against the child's hair. Then, slowly, the older woman stood up to her full height, her eyes locked onto Clara with a lethal intensity.

"And you," Martha growled, her voice trembling with restrained rage as she pointed a shaking finger toward the doorway, "get control of your husband."

Clara froze, the color draining from her face as Martha dropped a legal document onto the glass table.
