Chapter 6 - The Confession in the Dark

The harsh glare of the conservatory lights seemed to close in around Clara like the walls of a collapsing cage. She looked from Detective Miller’s impassive face to Jonathan’s cold, unblinking stare. The illusion of her invincibility was completely shattered, leaving only the raw, ugly truth exposed in the open air.
"You set me up," Clara whispered, her voice dropping into a venomous hiss as she glared at Jonathan. "You knew from the very beginning, didn't you? You married me just to gather enough rope to hang me!"
"I married you because you were a brilliant liar who made a fatal miscalculation," Jonathan replied evenly, stepping closer until he stood just inches away from her. "You thought Eleanor’s death made you the queen of this dynasty. You didn't realize that a dynasty built on thorns will eventually draw its own blood."
Detective Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of cold steel handcuffs from his belt. "Clara Vance, you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
"Don't touch me!" Clara shrieked, lashing out with her fingernails in a desperate, animalistic frenzy. She tried to bolt toward the glass doors leading out to the gardens, but the second officer intercepted her with practiced ease, spinning her around and forcing her arms behind her back with a definitive click of metal.
As the cold steel secured her wrists, Clara let out a strangled cry of rage, her vibrant red dress snagging on the thorny stem of a nearby rose bush. She twisted her head back, her eyes blazing with absolute hatred.
"You think you've won, Jonathan? You think your precious daughter is safe?" Clara laughed hysterically, her voice echoing off the glass panels. "You can lock me away, but you can never erase what I whispered into that little girl’s ear while you were busy mourning a dead woman!"
Jonathan froze mid-stride. Every drop of color vanished from his face. He grabbed Clara by the shoulders, his composure instantly evaporating into raw terror.
"What did you say to her?" Jonathan demanded, shaking her violently. "What did you tell my daughter, Clara?!"

Clara smiled, a dark, triumphant smirk spreading across her lips as the detectives pulled her toward the exit. "Ask her yourself... if she's ever brave enough to speak of it."
