Chapter 8 - The Woman in the Mist

The river water churned darkly against the wooden pilings of the old boathouse, sending up a fine, freezing mist that clung to Evelyn’s bare shoulders. The flashing lights of the police cruisers cast jagged, erratic shadows across the muddy riverbank where forensic technicians were already unrolling yellow crime scene tape. Evelyn stopped a few paces away from the water, her breath pluming in the cold night air. Clara’s small hand was warm inside hers, anchoring her to reality.

Out of the thick fog near the water’s edge stepped a woman wearing a heavy trench coat, her face half-hidden by a dark wool scarf. As she unraveled the fabric and lowered it, Evelyn stumbled backward, a sharp gasp escaping her lips.

The woman’s face bore the unmistakable, haunting lines of her own reflection, weathered by a decade of hiding, sun, and profound sorrow.

"Maya," Evelyn whispered, the name tearing at her throat. She dropped to her knees in the wet grass, heedless of the glittering sequins of her gown getting ruined in the mud. "You're... you're alive."

Maya didn't run to her. She stood there, her eyes swimming with unshed tears, looking down at her sister with a mixture of immense grief and hard-won survival. "I had to be, Evelyn. If I had stayed dead on paper, Julian and Richard would have finished the job they started twelve years ago."

"They told me you fell through the ice," Evelyn choked out, tears finally breaking free, freezing on her cheeks. "They showed me the police reports, the death certificate..."

"They forged everything," Maya said, her voice shaking slightly as she stepped closer, kneeling in the mud to take Evelyn’s trembling hands. "Julian pushed me off that very dock when I refused to sign over the family trust to his shell corporation. Richard pulled me out of the water, not to save me, but to lock me away in a private clinic upstate under a false name."

From behind them, the sound of heavy boots crunching on gravel heralded Detective Vance’s approach. He held up a muddy wooden box that his team had just pulled from beneath the boathouse floorboards.

"Mrs. Vance," the detective said, his voice solemn. He opened the lid of the box, revealing a stack of legal documents and a second artificial peach peony flower. "We found this under the floorboards. It matches the description of the trust documents reported stolen twelve years ago."

Maya looked up at the detective, then back at Evelyn. A bitter, sad smile touched her lips. "They thought they buried my future under those floorboards. But they forgot that roots grow in the dark."

Evelyn clutched her sister’s hands tighter, the nightmare of the past decade finally beginning to fracture under the weight of the truth. But before either of them could speak, a sharp, metallic click echoed from the shadows near the boathouse door, followed by the sound of a hammer being pulled back on a concealed firearm.
