Chapter 12 - The Offshore Transfer

The high-pitched whining sound emanated from the dashboard of the idling limousine as Arthur’s thumb held down the concealed button on the remote control. A small red LED light began blinking rapidly on the center console.

Detective Vance’s eyes widened. "He’s triggering a remote data wipe of the foundation’s servers! Drop the remote, Arthur, or you'll be facing obstruction charges on top of everything else!"

Arthur chuckled, a dry, rattling sound that lacked any real humor. "It’s too late, Detective. The encrypted packets are already halfway to the Cayman Islands. By the time the sun comes up, every account, every asset, and every shred of leverage this family holds will belong to a shell corporation that doesn't exist on paper."

Evelyn watched him with cold, terrifying stillness. She didn't panic, nor did she scream. Instead, she remembered the microchip she had pulled from the artificial peony stem hours earlier—the one she had handed to Vance, which the detective had quietly slipped to his cyber-crime unit before stepping out of the office.

"You always did underestimate the redundancy of our father's filing system, Arthur," Evelyn said quietly, stepping forward into the headlights.

Arthur’s smug expression faltered slightly. "What are you talking about?"

"Father knew you were skimming from the trust thirty years ago," Maya chimed in, stepping beside her sister with the leather folder. "That's why he set up a secondary, analog mirror account—one that requires a physical signature and a localized biometric token to execute any overseas transfer."

Detective Vance smiled, pulling out his department-issued tablet and tapping the screen twice. A loud, automated Access Denied tone echoed from a small portable transceiver clipped to his belt.

"Your remote wipe just triggered our trapdoor protocol, Mr. Sterling," Vance announced, snapping the tablet shut. "Every offshore account you tried to access has just been automatically frozen by the federal banking commission under suspicion of domestic terrorism financing."

Arthur’s face went instantly gray. He stumbled half a step backward, his polished shoe slipping in the wet mud. "That's... that's impossible. The mirror accounts were scrubbed in ninety-eight!"

"You missed a ledger," Clara piped up from the doorway of the boathouse, holding out a small, dust-covered notebook she had retrieved from the floorboards earlier. "It was tucked behind the family portrait in the library."

Arthur stared at the child, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. The impenetrable facade of the wealthy patriarch had completely dissolved, leaving behind a terrified old man trapped in the glare of police headlights.

Detective Vance stepped forward, holstering his weapon, and clicked the steel handcuffs around Arthur’s wrists with a sharp, satisfying click. "Arthur Sterling, you're under arrest for wire fraud, corporate embezzlement, and the unlawful confinement of Maya Vance."

As officers led Arthur toward the back of the cruiser, the old man shot one last venomous look at Evelyn and Maya.

"You think you won?" Arthur snarled as the door slammed shut. "You have no idea what secrets are still buried in the house."
