Chapter 13 - The Secret in the Library

The heavy oak doors of the grand estate creaked open as Evelyn and Maya walked back inside, leaving the chaos of the arrests to the authorities outside. The ballroom was completely empty now, the crystal chandelier casting a dim, melancholic light over the scattered champagne flutes and discarded programs of a charity gala that had turned into a crime scene. Clara walked between them, her shiny beige party dress swishing softly with every step, still holding the artificial peach peony flower like a talisman.

They bypassed the ballroom and headed straight up the grand staircase, their footsteps echoing through the cavernous hallways until they reached the double doors of the private library.

"Arthur mentioned the library," Evelyn said, her hand resting on the polished brass handle. "Specifically, what was hidden behind the family portrait."

Maya pushed the heavy door open, stepping into the dimly lit room lined from floor to ceiling with leather-bound volumes and dark mahogany shelves. The air smelled of old paper, dust, and polished wood. Above the grand stone fireplace hung the massive oil painting of their late grandfather, a stern-faced man who had built the Sterling empire on steel and ambition.

Evelyn approached the portrait, her fingers tracing the heavy gilded frame. "He said something was tucked behind it."

Clara walked straight past them, marching directly toward the fireplace. She reached up, her small fingers gripping the bottom corner of the heavy canvas, and pulled with surprising strength. With a dull click of a hidden spring-loaded latch, the entire portrait swung outward on a concealed hinge, revealing a hidden wall safe recessed deep into the brickwork.

Maya gasped, stepping closer. "I didn't even know this was here."

"Father kept his true secrets away from Arthur," Evelyn murmured, staring at the old mechanical combination dial on the safe door. "The combination... it’s the date Maya and I planted the peach tree in the courtyard."

With steady hands, Evelyn spun the dial left, right, and center, entering the four-digit sequence. With a satisfying metallic clunk, the heavy steel door swung open.

Inside the safe sat a single, leather-bound journal bearing their father’s handwriting, alongside a heavy brass key and a third artificial peach peony flower. Evelyn reached inside and pulled out the journal, flipping the pages until a loose photograph fluttered out and drifted down to land on the Persian rug.

Maya bent down, picked up the photograph, and stared at it, her breath catching in her throat.

It wasn't a picture of their family. It was a polaroid taken thirty years ago, showing a young Arthur Sterling standing over a second hidden safe in the basement of the old family estate, holding a document marked Confidential: Sterling Chemical Waste Disposal.

"It wasn't just embezzlement," Maya whispered, her eyes wide with horror as she looked at Evelyn. "The foundation... the money wasn't just stolen. It was hush money."

Before Evelyn could reply, the library telephone on the mahogany desk began to ring, piercing the heavy silence of the room with a shrill, demanding tone.
