Chapter 5 - The Initials on the Silver

The letters carved into the tarnished silver gleamed dully under the moonlight: J.K.

Evelyn stopped breathing. The wind howling through the broken window suddenly sounded like a distant roar, rushing in her ears until the rest of the world faded into static. She slowly turned her head back to look at Julian. The man who had stood beside her through a decade of grief, politics, and social ascension. The man who had sworn on his mother’s grave that Maya’s death was nothing more than a tragic, freezing accident.

Julian’s eyes darted to the locket in her hand, and the last shred of his carefully constructed composure shattered. All the color drained from his face, leaving his skin the gray-white of wet plaster. He took an involuntary step backward, his hands trembling as he shoved them deep into the pockets of his dark suit.

"Evelyn... where did you find that?" Julian’s voice was barely a rasp, stripped of its usual authority.

"You told me you were in the city that night," Evelyn whispered, her voice dangerously quiet. She lowered herself slowly back onto the Persian rug, the glass crunching beneath her shoes as she advanced on him. "You swore to the police, you swore to my parents, and you swore to me that you didn't arrive at the estate until an hour after the rescue boats had already gone out."

"I panicked," Julian stammered, raising a hand defensively as he backed up against the heavy oak door. "Evelyn, please, you have to understand how it looked. Her blood—the argument we had earlier that evening—if the police looked at us, we would have been the prime suspects."

"We were the suspects," Evelyn said, her voice rising, cracking with a lifetime of suppressed betrayal. "And you used your influence, your money, your lies to close the case in forty-eight hours!"

Clara stood quietly by the desk, watching them with wide, unblinking eyes, clutching the plastic peach peony flower against her chest.

"I did it to protect us," Julian pleaded, his voice breaking as tears finally welled in his eyes. "Maya was unstable. You know she was. She threatened to tear our lives apart with that ridiculous story about the embezzlement."

Evelyn stopped dead in her tracks. The air left the room entirely. "What did you say?"

Julian froze, realizing too late what he had let slip. He swallowed hard, his throat working convulsively. "I... I didn't mean—"

Before Julian could finish his sentence, the heavy oak door behind him suddenly swung open with a violent thud, revealing Richard standing in the hallway flanked by two uniformed private security guards.

"Pardon the interruption," Richard said smoothly, adjusting his bow tie with a sickeningly polite smile. "But the police are downstairs, Evelyn. And they have a warrant to search the entire estate for a body that was never actually in the river."
