Chapter 2 - The Microchip in the Stem

The tiny metallic chip caught the overhead light, glinting like a drop of cold grease against Evelyn’s manicured palm. The ballroom around them seemed to shrink, the chatter of elite socialites dissolving into a distant, muffled hum. Evelyn stared at the initials etched into the silicon: M.V. Her breath caught in her throat, a sharp pain blooming behind her ribs. Maya. Her sister, who had vanished twelve years ago under circumstances the police had conveniently labeled a tragic accident.

Julian stepped closer, his tailored blue blazer rustling as he reached out to intercept the tiny object. "Evelyn, put that down. This is entirely inappropriate for a charity gala."

"Don't you dare touch me, Julian," Evelyn hissed, her voice trembling with a fury that superseded her shock. She backed away, clutching the microchip as if it were a live ember. She turned her gaze to the man in the tuxedo, who stood observing the scene with chilling detachment. "Did you know about this, Richard? Were you part of the playacting tonight?"

Richard adjusted his bow tie slowly, his face a mask of practiced indifference. "I only manage the venue, Evelyn. What families choose to dredge up during cocktail hour is hardly my department. Though I must admit, your little niece has quite a dramatic flair."

Evelyn looked back down at Clara. The little girl stood motionless in her shiny beige party dress, her blonde braids resting neatly over her shoulders. There was no fear in the child's eyes, only an eerie, heavy patience.

"Where did you get this, Clara?" Evelyn asked, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "Who gave you this flower?"

"A lady with a scarf over her face," Clara answered simply, tilting her head. "She told me to wait until the music stopped and the lights hit your eyes just right. She said you'd finally remember the promise you made by the river."

Julian’s face went pale. He shot a frantic look toward the grand staircase, where security guards were beginning to notice the cluster of tension near the buffet. "Evelyn, listen to me. Whatever is on that chip is a fabrication. A sick joke played by people who want to destroy everything we've built."

"We built?" Evelyn spun around, her eyes blazing. "You built a tomb, Julian. And you put me in charge of decorating it." She clenched her fist around the microchip, the sharp edges biting into her skin. "I'm going to my office. If any of you follow me, I swear to God I'll burn this entire foundation to the ground."

She turned on her heel, her glittering gown sweeping across the floor. As she reached the heavy oak doors, a soft beep echoed from her purse. She pulled out her encrypted phone. The screen flashed a single line of text from an unknown sender.
