Chapter 11 - The Limousine on the Docks

The blinding high beams of the black limousine cut through the river fog like twin lances of light, painting the crime scene in stark, bleached relief. The heavy vehicle didn't slow down as it approached the yellow police tape; instead, it accelerated, engine roaring aggressively as it plowed right through the plastic barrier and fishtailed to a halt mere feet from the water’s edge.
Detective Vance instantly drew his service weapon, dropping into a tactical stance. "Stay back!" he shouted, motioning for Evelyn and Maya to retreat toward the boathouse wall.
The rear door of the limousine clicked open, and stepping out onto the muddy gravel was Arthur Sterling. He wore a heavy cashmere overcoat, his silver-grey hair neatly combed, his posture straight and unyielding despite his advanced age. He looked less like a cornered fugitive and more like a CEO arriving for a hostile corporate takeover.
"Put the gun away, Detective," Arthur said smoothly, his voice carrying effortlessly over the hum of the idling engine. He adjusted his silk scarf, looking at Evelyn and Maya with a gaze completely devoid of warmth. "Brandishing weapons at senior citizens is a terrible look for the department."
"It's an even worse look when the senior citizen is headed to federal prison for kidnapping and grand larceny," Detective Vance snapped, keeping his weapon trained squarely on Arthur’s chest.
Arthur didn't even flinch. He slowly turned his cold, calculating eyes toward Maya. "Well, well. The ghost of the family returns. I told Richard you should have been properly disposed of twelve years ago, but Julian insisted on a softer touch."
Evelyn stepped out from the shadow of the boathouse, her ruined sequined gown gleaming dully in the headlights. Her face was a mask of cold fury. "You lied to me for twelve years, Arthur. You held me in your arms while I cried for a sister you had locked away in a cage."
"I saved this family from financial ruin, Evelyn," Arthur replied, his voice dripping with condescension. "Maya’s reckless idealism was going to bankrupt the entire estate before we even launched the foundation. Julian understood that. Richard understood that. You were simply too naive to see the bigger picture."
"You ruined our lives," Maya said, stepping forward beside her sister, holding the leather folder tightly in her hands. "And now it ends."
Arthur’s eyes flicked to the leather folder, and for the first time, a flicker of genuine panic crossed his aged features. He slowly reached inside his coat pocket.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you, Arthur," a calm voice echoed from behind the limousine.
Arthur froze. Two unmarked police cruisers slid silently out of the fog, blocking the limousine’s only exit route, their blue and red lights flashing with relentless fury.
Arthur slowly pulled his empty hand out of his coat, a bitter, defeated smile touching his lips. "You think arresting me solves anything? The board already voted an hour ago to dissolve the foundation and transfer all holdings offshore. You won't find a single penny left."

He reached out and pressed a button on a sleek remote control he had concealed in his palm, and the engine of the limousine suddenly emitted a strange, high-pitched whining sound.
