Chapter 9 - The Psychiatrist's Warning

Mark stared at the yellowed psychiatric evaluation, the words swimming slightly before his eyes. The room felt entirely airless. He looked back down at the lockbox, realizing with sickening clarity just how dangerous the woman he had married truly was. She hadn't just been a difficult stepmother; she was a clinically unstable predator who had carefully engineered her way into his home and his life.

Sophie leaned over his shoulder, peering curiously at the strange papers. "What does that mean, Daddy? Is that about Helena?"

Mark gently folded the medical report and placed it back into the manila envelope, pulling Sophie closer into a protective embrace. "It means Helena was very sick, sweetheart. And she lied to us about almost everything. But you are safe now. I promise you, she will never come back into this house."

He reached back into the steel lockbox and picked up the heavy leather-bound journal. The cover was worn, the edges frayed. Curious, Mark flipped the brass clasp and opened to the very first handwritten page. The handwriting was neat, elegant, but entirely unfamiliar—it certainly wasn’t Helena’s sharp, erratic cursive.

Journal of Dr. Jonathan Vance, the header read.

Mark frowned. Vance? Helena’s maiden name was Miller. Why would a journal belonging to someone with her last name be locked away in this box?

He scanned the first few entries, his eyes widening in shock as the dark history unraveled before him.

June 12th, the entry began. Helena's psychological regression is worsening. Despite our best efforts at the clinic, her obsession with assuming the identities of wealthy widows has escalated. She refuses to acknowledge her previous marriage or the tragic accident involving her first husband.

Mark stopped reading, his heart pounding against his ribs. First husband? Helena had explicitly told Mark before their wedding that she had never been married before. She had claimed she was a successful independent art curator who had spent her entire life traveling abroad.

"Daddy, what's that book?" Sophie asked, noticing the tension in her father's posture.

"It's... it's a journal about the past, sweetie," Mark answered, his voice strained. He turned the page, skipping ahead to an entry dated just two months before he had first met Helena at a charity gala downtown.

September 4th, the journal continued. She escaped the facility tonight. She took my mother's vintage sapphire ring and forged my signature on the family trust documents. I fear for whoever crosses paths with her next. She is a master of mimicry, capable of wearing any face necessary to infiltrate a home and claim it as her own.

The signature at the bottom of the page read: Dr. Jonathan Vance, Chief Neurologist and Legal Guardian.

Mark slammed the journal shut, the heavy thud echoing softly against the pink bedroom walls. The pieces of the terrifying puzzle finally clicked into place with horrifying precision. Helena wasn't just a cruel stepmother; she was an impostor who had assumed the identity of a doctor's relative, hunted down wealthy, vulnerable widowers, and systematically destroyed families from the inside out.

He stood up abruptly, pulling his phone back out of his pocket. He needed to call the precinct immediately and amend the charges. Fraud and child endangerment were just the tip of the iceberg.

Before his thumb could hit the call button, the landline phone mounted on the wall beside Sophie’s bedroom door began to ring shrilly, breaking the silence of the night.
