Chapter 8 - The Locked Box

Mark felt a cold chill run down his spine. He stood up slowly, taking Sophie’s small hand in his. "Come on, sweetheart. Let's go take a look together. You don't have to be afraid anymore. She's gone."
Hand in hand, they walked out of the brightly lit kitchen, leaving behind the dog bowl with its scattered kibble—a haunting artifact of the night's horrors. They climbed the carpeted staircase to the second floor, the shadows stretching long and deep beneath the hallway sconces.
Sophie’s bedroom door was painted a soft pastel pink, adorned with glowing star stickers that she had pasted there with her mother years ago. Inside, the room was neat, smelling faintly of lavender and old picture books. Mark walked straight to the wooden wardrobe standing in the corner, sliding the louvered doors open.
Pushed far into the dark corner beneath a pile of heavy winter coats and woolen sweaters sat a heavy, industrial-grade steel lockbox. It was matte black, secured by a complex digital keypad rather than a traditional keyhole.
"That's it," Sophie whispered, pointing a trembling finger at the box. "She made me promise never to touch it."
Mark knelt down on the pink carpet, pulling the heavy steel container out into the ambient light of the bedroom. He examined the digital keypad. It had a six-digit entry code and a USB diagnostic port on the side.
"Let's see what our wonderful stepmother was hiding from us," Mark murmured grimly.
He pulled his smartphone from his pocket, connecting a data cable directly from his phone to the lockbox’s diagnostic port. Because Helena had utilized standard smart-home encryption protocols across all her personal devices, Mark’s master administrative override code—which he had secretly configured into the house's master server network months ago—recognized the lockbox as a peripheral node.
The small LED screen on the steel box blinked from angry red to a steady, affirming green. With a soft pneumatic click, the heavy lid sprang upward by an inch.
Mark lifted the lid completely. Inside, resting on a bed of dark velvet, were not stolen jewels or financial documents, but a stack of old audio cassettes, a heavy leather-bound journal, and a thick manila envelope stamped with the logo of a private psychiatric facility downtown.
Mark carefully picked up the manila envelope and pulled out the primary document. He unfolded the stiff paper, his eyes scanning the printed medical header.
Patient Assessment Record: Helena Vance.
Diagnosis: Severe Sociopathic Narcissism with Histrionic Tendencies.
Admitted: Five years prior to current date. Discharged against medical advice following unexplained financial settlement.
Mark’s breath caught in his throat as he read further down the page, his eyes locking onto a handwritten paragraph scrawled by the attending chief psychiatrist at the bottom of the evaluation form.
