Chapter 13 - The Pantry Breach

Mark watched in horror on the monitor as the intruder pivoted sharply toward the kitchen pantry. The man didn't hesitate; he walked briskly across the tile floor, shouldered the swinging pantry door open wide, and stepped directly into the narrow storage space.
On the screen, the intruder’s flashlight swept across the rows of canned goods, illuminating the back metal shelving rack. The man reached out with a heavy gloved hand and roughly shoved the entire metal shelving unit aside, exposing the hidden steel vault door embedded in the drywall.
"Found it," the intruder muttered into his radio transmitter.
Inside the panic room, Sophie grabbed Mark’s sleeve, her eyes wide with terror. "Daddy, he's going to find us, isn't he? He's right outside the door."
"Listen to me, Sophie," Mark whispered fiercely, kneeling down so he was eye-level with her again. He placed his hands gently on her face, projecting absolute calm despite the chaos unfolding outside. "This door is made of five inches of solid reinforced steel. He cannot open it without the master hydraulic override code, and that code is stored only on my personal biometric server inside this room. We are completely safe here. Let him try."
On the monitor, the intruder stepped right up to the steel vault door. He ran his gloved fingers across the digital keypad, testing a few random numeric sequences before realizing it required an advanced administrative handshake protocol.
The man cursed under his breath, reaching into his tactical vest to pull out a heavy-duty electronic breaching device—a portable bypass rig designed to hack smart-locks and override digital security nodes. He slammed the magnetic nodes of the device directly against the keypad interface.
A series of angry red warning lights began to flash rapidly across the keypad. A high-pitched whining sound filled the pantry as the breaching tool attempted to force its way through the vault's internal firewall.
Mark watched the diagnostic readout on his main monitor. Firewall integrity: 98%... 94%... 88%...
"He's trying to brute-force the digital handshake," Mark murmured to himself, his hands flying across the keyboard as he initiated a counter-protocol. "If he bypasses the secondary encryption layer, he could trigger the manual release."
"Can you stop him, Daddy?" Sophie whispered, burying her face in his jacket.
"I'm locking him out permanently," Mark replied grimly. He tapped a final sequence into the keyboard, executing an emergency system purge that flooded the vault's external interface with a massive surge of high-voltage electrical feedback.
On the screen, the intruder suddenly flinched back, yelling out in pain as a bright blue electrical arc snapped from the keypad straight into his tactical glove. He dropped his breaching tool, clutching his smoking hand with a curse of pure rage.
The intruder slammed his fist against the steel door in frustration. "Open this door, Reynolds! You can't hide in there forever! We have your entire network compromised! The local police aren't coming back—they're tied up across town dealing with a false hostage report!"

Mark didn't answer. He simply watched the man's angry silhouette on the monitor, his hand resting firmly on the emergency uplink button connected directly to the federal cyber-crimes division.
