Chapter 2 - The Digital Alibi

Mark stood frozen in the center of the kitchen, his arms still trembling around little Sophie. The harsh fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, casting an unforgiving glare across the gleaming marble countertops. Helena stood by the island, her manicured fingers tightly clutching the strap of her leather handbag. Her face had drained of all color, her lips parted in a silent, desperate gasp.

"Mark, please," Helena stammered, her voice dropping to a shaky whisper as she took a cautious step backward. "You are not thinking straight. The smart-home system malfunctioned. It sent an automated error alert to my phone at five o'clock. It said the heating element short-circuited. I tried to order takeout, but the delivery apps were completely jammed because of the holiday traffic. I swear to you, I didn't mean for it to reach this point."

Mark glared at her, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle twitched violently in his cheek. He did not drop his gaze. He kept the phone raised, the glowing screen illuminating the fury burning deep within his eyes. The digital interface displayed the archived security footage from the hidden nanny cam mounted above the pantry.

"Don't lie to me, Helena," Mark growled, his voice vibrating with a dangerous, controlled rage that terrified even himself. "I watched the download progress bar. I saw the timestamps. You didn't just order takeout. You canceled the reservation at the steakhouse. You turned off the kitchen wall switches manually. You watched her wander over to Buster's bowl because you told her that was her plate."

Helena shook her head frantically, tears finally spilling over her mascara-lined eyelashes. "She was acting out, Mark! All day long she refused to practice her piano lessons. She threw her birthday crown into the garbage disposal. I was trying to teach her a lesson about gratitude and consequences. A child needs boundaries, especially with a stepmother who is trying her best to keep this household together."

Sophie buried her face deeper into her father's shoulder, her small frame wracking with quiet, exhausted sobs. She clutched a fold of Mark's white button-down shirt, her tiny fingers turning his cotton fabric white with pressure.

"She called you a name, Helena," Mark whispered, stepping forward while holding Sophie securely against his chest. "When you walked into the hallway just now, she didn't just point. She recognized the ring on your finger. That unique vintage sapphire. It belonged to my late wife. You told me you bought it at an antique store downtown last month."

Helena froze instantly. The color vanished from her cheeks entirely, leaving her looking remarkably like a ghost in the bright kitchen lights. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.

Mark slowly lowered his phone, his thumb tapping the screen to bring up a second, password-protected folder labeled 'Financial Audits'.

"And that," Mark whispered coldly, tapping the screen, "is why my corporate lawyer called me five minutes before I pulled into the driveway."
