Chapter 5 - The Confession Tape

The kitchen speakers hissed softly before Helena’s recorded voice echoed off the tile walls.
“Just a few more weeks,” the recorded audio whispered clearly. “Once the trust fund transfers over on her birthday, Mark signs the secondary deed. Then the accident on the icy bridge takes care of the rest.”
Helena stopped breathing. Her face turned chalk white, her eyes widening in absolute terror as she stared at the kitchen speaker. The smug smirk was completely gone, replaced by a look of sheer, unadulterated panic. She lunged forward, her hands clawing through the air toward Mark’s phone.
"Delete that!" Helena shrieked, her voice cracking as she grabbed for the device. "That's manipulated! You used AI software to fake my voice! Turn it off, Mark! Turn it off right now!"
Mark easily sidestepped her lunge, holding the phone high above his head out of her reach. He caught her wrist with his free hand, his grip unyielding and firm.
"Artificial intelligence?" Mark asked coldly, looking down at her withering expression. "Is that why the home security logs also show you logging into my desktop computer at three in the morning to modify Sophie’s medical insurance beneficiary? You designated yourself as the sole primary payout receiver for a million-dollar accidental death policy."
Sophie sat quietly on the barstool, sipping her water. She didn't understand all the financial terms, but she understood the terror in Helena's face.
"You... you checked the server logs?" Helena whispered, her knees weakening. She stumbled back against the kitchen island, her breathing coming in short, ragged gasps. "How did you know to look? I wiped the terminal history."
"You wiped the browser cache, Helena," Mark replied, stepping closer, towering over her. "You forgot that the network-attached storage box mirrors every keystroke to an off-site backup server in my corporate office. Every file you touched, every password you guessed, every document you altered—it was all timestamped and verified by my IT security team before I even walked through the front door tonight."
Helena stared at him, her chest heaving. The illusion of control was entirely shattered. She realized in that terrifying instant that her carefully constructed trap had not caught Mark; it had only exposed her own deeply calculated premeditation.
"You set a trap for me," Helena whispered accusingly, tears of frustration stinging her eyes.
"You set a trap for my eight-year-old daughter on her birthday," Mark retorted, his voice rising in righteous fury. "You starved her, humiliated her, and plotted against our lives. And you thought you could hide behind a civil contract."
Mark reached into his pocket with his free hand and pulled out a second set of objects, dropping them with a sharp metallic clatter onto the granite island. A pair of heavy steel police handcuffs.
"What are those for?" Helena gasped, staring at the cold metal.

"For the authorities," Mark said, tapping the screen of his phone to reveal an active emergency call in progress. "They've been listening to this live feed for the last ten minutes."
