Chapter 14 - The Federal Cavalry

The digital clock in the corner of the panic room monitor ticked silently: 3:42 AM. Outside the reinforced steel vault door, the intruder had stopped banging against the metal. On the external security cameras covering the front yard and the street, a dramatic shift in the environment suddenly unfolded.
Three unmarked federal tactical SUVs rounded the corner of the suburban street at breakneck speed, their high-intensity floodlights instantly illuminating the entire property in a blinding white glare. Within seconds, a dozen heavily armed federal agents clad in tactical black gear poured out of the vehicles, establishing an immediate perimeter around the house.
On the kitchen camera feed, the intruder spun around in alarm as the front door was kicked off its remaining hinges with a deafening crash.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Drop your weapon!" a booming voice echoed through the hallway speakers.
The intruder didn't even have time to raise his firearm. Three agents swarmed into the kitchen, tackling him violently to the tile floor and pinning him beneath a tangle of combat boots and heavy restraints.
"Clear! Suspect secured!" an agent barked into his shoulder radio.
Inside the panic room, Mark let out a long, shuddering breath he felt like he had been holding for hours. He turned off the monitoring system, stood up, and looked down at Sophie, who had curled up on the small cot and fallen into an exhausted, safe sleep amidst all the turmoil.
Mark gently scooped his daughter up into his arms, ensuring she stayed completely wrapped in her warm blanket. He walked over to the vault door, entered the manual override code, and turned the heavy steel deadbolts.
The vault door swung open with a soft hiss, welcoming the fresh air of the pantry and the bright, clean lights of the federal agents waiting just outside.
An older, silver-haired man in a federal tactical vest stepped forward into the pantry, lowering his weapon as he recognized Mark.
"Mr. Reynolds?" the agent asked professionally. "I'm Special Agent Vance—Director of the Federal Cyber-Crimes Division."
Mark blinked in surprise, staring at the agent’s face. Despite the gray hair, the sharp, intelligent eyes were unmistakable. "Vance? Are you... are you related to Jonathan Vance?"
The agent nodded slowly, a somber expression crossing his features. "He was my younger brother. We've been tracking Eleanor Brooks—the woman you knew as Helena—for over five years across three different jurisdictions. She used my brother's psychiatric clinic files to build a completely fabricated identity network."
Mark stepped out of the panic room, carefully shielding Sophie against his shoulder. "She's gone?"
"She was intercepted at the private airstrip ten minutes ago by our regional containment unit," Agent Vance confirmed grimly. "She won't be seeing the light of day ever again. Her entire network has been dismantled from the root."

Mark looked down at his sleeping daughter, feeling an immense, overwhelming wave of relief wash over him. The nightmare was finally over.
