Chapter 5 - The Bloodstained Brick

"Clara! No!" Helena screamed, abandoning all caution as she chased after her daughter into the suffocating gloom of the alley network.

Marcus let out a low, irritated sigh, tapping his earpiece. "Secure the perimeter. Do not let either of them leave the district. I want the girl, and I want the mother brought in for interrogation."

Clara’s black shoes pounded frantically against the damp cobblestones as she rounded a sharp corner where two towering brick buildings squeezed the alley down to barely a shoulder's width. The air here smelled of rotting garbage and stagnant water. Posters peeling from the walls flapped weakly in the draft, their faded colors mocking the desperation of the moment.

"Hey! Over here!" Clara gasped, skidding to a halt.

A few yards ahead, the heavyset man in the suit had cornered the homeless girl against a dead-end brick wall. The child was backed into a tight corner, her ragged dress torn at the shoulder, breathing heavily with a mix of exhaustion and absolute terror. The man reached out a large, calloused hand, grabbing the front of her tattered dress and hoisting her slightly off the ground.

"Got you, you little rat," the man grunted, his face red from the chase. "Hand over the drive before I break your arm."

"I don't have anything!" the homeless girl choked out, her big blue eyes swimming with tears as she kicked frantically with her bare feet. "Let me go!"

"Stop it! Let her go!" Clara yelled, scooping up a loose brick from the base of the wall and hurling it with all her might at the man's back.

The heavy brick struck the man squarely between his shoulder blades with a dull thud. He grunted in surprise, dropping the homeless girl to the ground as he spun around, his face contorted with rage. He glared at Clara, who stood frozen in horror at what she had just done, her hands trembling violently.

"You little brat," the man growled, taking a threatening step toward Clara.

Before he could reach her, Helena rounded the corner, her face carved from absolute fury. Without a word, she lunged at the man, slamming her heavy leather handbag into the side of his head with terrifying force. The man staggered sideways, his temple connecting hard with the sharp edge of a protruding brick before he collapsed unconscious onto the wet stones.

A heavy, sickening silence fell over the dead-end alley, broken only by the sound of three pairs of ragged breathing. Helena stood over the fallen agent, her chest heaving, her knuckles bleeding where her ring had caught the man's skin.

The homeless girl slowly crawled out from the corner, her fingers stained with fresh blood from a scrape on her elbow. She looked up at Helena with a mixture of awe and lingering dread.

"He's not dead," Helena whispered hoarsely, wiping a smear of dirt and sweat from her forehead. She looked down at the homeless girl, her expression softening into a tragic, heartbreaking resolve. "What's your name, child?"

"Maya," the girl whispered back, her voice shaking.

May you like

Helena knelt down in the dirt, ignoring the ruined hem of her beige skirt, and gently took Maya's cold, dirty hand. "Listen to me very carefully, Maya. We are going to my house. And you are going to tell me everything you know about the ledger."
