Chapter 13 - The Torrent

A deafening roar filled the subterranean tunnel as a massive geyser of high-pressure water burst from a split seam in the rusted main pipe directly above the guards. The sheer volume of water hit the concrete floor like a tidal wave, instantly washing away the armed guards' footing and sending their weapons clattering into the rushing current.
"Fall back! Grab the rail!" one of the guards shouted over the roar of the water, but it was already too late.
The torrent swept through the iron security gate, lifting the heavily armored men off their feet and tossing them downstream like ragdolls as they scrambled desperately for handholds in the dark.
Helena scrambled down the ladder, landing with a heavy splash in the churning water beside David, Clara, and Maya.
"The gate is clear!" David yelled, grabbing Helena's hand to steady her against the powerful current. "Move, move, move! Before they manage to loop back around!"
They waded through the waist-deep, rushing water, pushing past the bent iron bars of the security gate and sprinting down the newly opened corridor. Maya was too weak to walk on her own now, so David scooped the little girl up into his arms, carrying her against his chest as they pressed forward through the gloom.
After ten agonizing minutes of wading through the dark, the tunnel finally opened up into a massive underground maintenance chamber. Ahead of them, a rusted iron staircase led upward toward a heavy steel hatch framing a pale circle of gray morning light.
"That's it," David panted, setting Maya down gently on a dry concrete landing at the base of the stairs. "That hatch leads to the old railway siding outside the quarantine zone. Once we hit the tracks, we can flag down the morning cargo freighter."
Clara collapsed against the cold concrete steps, her breathing ragged, her school uniform ruined and soaked through. "I can't believe we actually made it," she whispered, looking up at her mother. "Mom... what happens to us now? Where do we go once we get out of the city?"
Helena knelt down beside her daughter, brushing a wet strand of blond hair from Clara's forehead. Her face was exhausted, scarred by the events of the past twenty-four hours, but for the first time in a decade, her eyes held a genuine, unburdened peace.
"We go somewhere safe, Clara," Helena said softly, wrapping her arms around her daughter and pulling her close. "We go somewhere where nobody has to hide who they are anymore."
Maya stirred on the landing, her blue eyes fluttering open as she looked up at Helena and Clara. A weak, beautiful smile touched her smudge-pitted face. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice barely audible over the distant rumble of the city above.
"You're family now, Maya," Helena replied, kissing the top of the little girl's messy light brown hair. "We're never leaving you behind again."
David climbed the metal stairs and pushed against the heavy steel hatch. With a loud groan of protesting hinges, the door swung open, flooding the dark chamber with the crisp, clean light of a new dawn.

But as David poked his head out to survey the tracks, his expression instantly froze into an absolute mask of horror.
