Chapter 4 - Into the Labyrinth

"Stop her!" Marcus commanded sharply, gesturing to someone still sitting in the front seat of the idling sedan.

The passenger door flew open, and a second heavyset man in a matching dark suit bolted out, charging into the labyrinth of brick alleyways after the fleeing child. Clara screamed as she watched the heavy-set man easily clear the distance between himself and the barefoot homeless girl, who was desperately weaving around overturned trash cans and graffiti-covered walls.

"No! Leave her alone!" Clara cried, trying to run after them, but Helena grabbed her shoulders with iron strength, spinning the schoolgirl around and forcing her face into her mother's beige blouse.

"Look at me, Clara! Look at me right now!" Helena commanded, her voice cracking with raw panic. "If you run into that maze, we both die. Do you understand me? We both die!"

Tears streamed down Clara's face as she muffled her sobs against her mother's chest, her mind racing with a hundred terrifying questions. "Why are they chasing her, Mom? What did she do? She's just a little girl!"

Marcus watched the pursuit with detached coldness, adjusting his cuffs before turning his attention back to Helena. "You were careless, Helena. Coming back to this district was a catastrophic mistake. The Director authorized full surveillance protocols three weeks ago. He knew you were getting nostalgic."

"I didn't come back for her," Helena whispered fiercely, glaring up at Marcus with pure venom. "I didn't even know she survived the winter purge. I thought the entire sector zero-eight facility was leveled to the ground."

"Nothing is ever truly leveled," Marcus replied softly, stepping closer. "And now that the girl has seen your face—and more importantly, now that she possesses that specific piece of contraband—we have a severe security breach on our hands. Where is the master ledger, Helena? We know you took it when you escaped."

Helena’s eyes widened in sudden, absolute shock. "I burned that ledger ten years ago. Every single page turned to ash in front of my eyes."

"Did you?" Marcus smiled coldly, reaching into his suit jacket. "Then how do you explain the encrypted transmissions coming from this exact neighborhood over the past forty-eight hours? The girl isn't just a stray, Helena. She's the living decryption key."

Before Helena could process the horrifying implication of his words, a loud crash echoed from deep within the alleyway, followed by a sharp, muffled cry of pain that sounded unmistakably like the homeless girl.

Clara jerked away from her mother's grip, her eyes blazing with a fierce, desperate courage. Without a second thought, she ducked past Marcus and sprinted headfirst into the dark, twisting maze of brick walls.
