Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Sacrifice

The air in the substation turned to ice as Marcus’s finger tightened on the trigger of his suppression pistol. The cold, calculating smile on his face made it clear that he had no intention of taking any of them alive.
"Don't you dare touch her!" Helena screamed, abandoning all cover as she lunged out from behind the control cabinets, throwing herself directly into the line of fire between Marcus and the workbench.
"Mom! No!" Clara shrieked in absolute terror, scrambling out after her mother.
Before Marcus could adjust his aim to the new target, a deafening explosion ripped through the ceiling directly above the entrance. A massive section of rusted corrugated metal and brickwork collapsed inward, crushing the tactical sniper post and burying the doorway in tons of rubble. Marcus was thrown sideways by the concussive blast, slamming hard against a concrete pillar and dropping his weapon as the dust blinded him completely.
"David! What did you do?" Helena yelled, coughing violently as the room filled with a choking cloud of soot and pulverized cement.
David emerged from behind the control panels, his face smeared with black soot, clutching a smoking thermal detonator in his left hand. "I blew the structural support beams! It's the only way to block their reinforcements from the main street! But the whole roof is coming down—we have less than two minutes before this entire building caves in!"
At the workbench, the terminal screen flashed a brilliant, blinding green.

A loud, triumphant chime rang out from the ancient hardware speakers. Maya stared at the screen, her smudge-pitted face illuminated by the words SYSTEM WIDE DECLASSIFICATION IN PROGRESS.
"It worked," Maya whispered, a weak, incredible smile breaking through her terrified expression. "The world knows."
"We did it," Helena breathed, rushing over to the workbench and sweeping Maya up into her arms, pulling the little girl tightly against her chest regardless of the dirt and blood. She turned to Clara and David, urgency sharp in her voice. "Now we move! Out through the emergency drainage tunnel behind the generator!"
They didn't waste a single second. David took the lead, using his heavy iron crowbar to pry open a rusted circular hatch set into the back wall of the substation, revealing a dark, rushing underground water chute. The sound of sirens wailing in the distance grew louder by the second, signaling that municipal security forces were swarming the surrounding blocks.
David dropped through the hatch first, landing with a splash in the shallow water below. "Come on! Slide down one by one! Watch your footing!"
Clara went next, gripping the edge of the metal ring before sliding down into the darkness, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
Helena turned to follow, holding Maya securely in her arms. But before she could swing her legs over the rim of the hatch, a heavy hand grabbed the back of her beige blouse and yanked her backward with brutal force.
Helena hit the concrete floor hard, gasping for air as Maya was knocked from her grip, skidding across the dusty floor toward the rubble.
Through the clearing smoke, Marcus stood over them. His suit was torn, and blood trickled down his temple, but his eyes burned with psychotic fury. In his hand, he held a detonator with a blinking red light.

"You think a simple broadcast stops the Directorate?" Marcus hissed, his voice trembling with manic rage. "We own the infrastructure. We own the grid. And if I press this button, this entire block—including every single file server holding your precious data—goes up in nuclear fire."
