Chapter 14 - The Final Obstacle

"David? What is it? Is the coast clear?" Helena called out, hoisting Maya back into her arms as she and Clara climbed the metal stairs to join him on the landing.
David didn't answer right away. He slowly stepped back down two rungs, his face drained of all color, his eyes wide with a terrifying realization.
Helena reached the top platform and peered through the open hatch. Her breath caught sharply in her throat, and she felt the ground practically drop out from beneath her feet.
Stretching across the entire length of the abandoned railway siding was a full tactical blockade of Directorate armored vehicles. Searchlights crisscrossed the foggy morning air, illuminating dozens of armed security operatives who stood in a tight, disciplined semicircle around the exit hatch.
And standing directly in front of the lead transport vehicle, flanked by two armed guards, was the Director himself—an elderly, severe-looking man in an impeccably tailored dark coat, holding a heavy leather-bound portfolio under his arm.
"Well, well, well," the Director's amplified voice boomed across the empty tracks, cold and devoid of any human warmth. "The stray returns to the fold, accompanied by her traitorous little family and a persistent little rat from the slums."
Clara gasped, dropping back behind her mother in sheer panic. "Mom... who is that? How did they know we would come out of this specific exit?"
"They didn't," Helena whispered, her voice trembling as she tightened her grip on Maya. "They calculated every single drainage outlet within a fifty-mile radius. We walked right into their trap."
Marcus stepped out from behind the Director, nursing a bruised shoulder with a tight grimace, casting a venomous glare directly at Helena. "You caused a lot of trouble today, Helena. You destroyed archives that took forty years to compile. But you forgot one fundamental rule of the Directorate: you can never truly delete the past."
The Director took a slow, deliberate step forward, his cold eyes locking onto Maya in Helena's arms. "Hand over the child and the data drive, Helena. And perhaps—just perhaps—I will allow your daughter to walk away from this railway line with a clean record."
"Don't listen to him, Mom! It's a trick!" Clara cried out, grabbing Helena's arm with desperate strength. "If you give them Maya, they'll kill us all anyway!"
