Chapter 12 - The Iron Gate

The harsh beam of the tactical flashlight caught the reflection of rifle scopes gleaming coldly behind the heavy iron security bars fifty yards down the tunnel. The armed guards stood shoulder-to-shoulder, blocking the only viable exit route from the subterranean labyrinth.
"Halt! Turn around and drop to your knees immediately!" an amplified voice barked, echoing deafeningly off the curved concrete walls of the sewer pipe.
David shoved Helena and the two girls behind a concrete junction pillar, raising his submachine gun. "Damn it, they anticipated the drainage route. This sector must be completely locked down."
"How many of them are there?" Clara whispered, her teeth chattering from the cold water as she clutched her mother's arm. Tears tracked through the soot on her face. "Mom, are we going to die down here?"
"No one is dying today," Helena said firmly, though her own heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked down at Maya, who was leaning heavily against the damp brick wall, her breathing dangerously shallow. The fever was taking hold of the child rapidly.
"We can't fight our way through three heavily armed guards in a bottleneck corridor," David muttered, keeping his weapon trained on the gate while scanning the surrounding stonework. "We need a diversion. Or another way out."
"Look up," Maya whispered weakly, pointing a trembling finger toward the ceiling directly above the guards.
David and Helena raised their flashlights. Running along the curved roof of the sewer line was a massive, rusted steel water pipe, bolted directly into the crumbling brickwork with heavy industrial brackets that looked decades old. A series of warning labels hung from the pipe, reading HIGH PRESSURE MAIN – EMERGENCY RELEASE ONLY.
"The main line," Helena realized instantly, a dangerous spark of hope igniting in her eyes. "If we rupture that valve..."
"It’ll flood the entire corridor with five thousand gallons of pressurized water," David finished, a grim smile touching his lips. "It'll wash those guards right back toward the central basin and clear our path."
"Do it," Helena instructed, pushing Clara safely behind the junction pillar. "David, cover me. I'm going to climb the ladder."
Before David could argue, Helena scrambled up the rusted iron rungs bolted to the side of the sewer wall, her hands scraping against the freezing metal. Above her, the armed guards at the gate were shouting warnings, their flashlights sweeping frantically back and forth across the tunnel.
"Target sighted on the ladder! Fire!" one of the guards screamed.
A volley of submachine gun fire ricocheted off the brickwork inches from Helena's head, sending a shower of sparks and stone chips cascading down into the water below. Clara screamed, covering her ears as David opened fire with a fierce burst of suppressive cover fire, forcing the guards to duck behind the iron security bars.
Helena reached the top of the ladder, threw her entire body weight against the massive wheel-valve attached to the high-pressure main, and twisted with every ounce of strength she possessed.
The rusted valve groaned, stuck fast with years of corrosion. Helena cried out in frustration, planted her boot against the pipe, and heaved with all her might.

With a loud, metallic shriek, the valve gave way.
