Chapter 7 - The Counter-Strike

The mahogany-paneled courtroom of the federal district court was packed to capacity by two o'clock that afternoon. Flashbulbs popped outside the heavy double doors as Julian walked in flanked by four high-priced attorneys, his face tight with controlled rage and exhaustion. He wore a sharp charcoal suit instead of his usual white dress shirt, projecting an image of corporate victimization. Chloe sat two rows behind him, hiding behind oversized sunglasses and a designer trench coat, desperately trying to avoid the piercing lenses of the media cameras.

Elena entered through the side gallery doors ten minutes later, accompanied by Marcus Vance and Arthur Sterling. She wore a tailored black pantsuit that accentuated her resolute posture, her bruised arms completely concealed beneath thick wool sleeves. She walked with the quiet, devastating grace of an apex predator returning to reclaim her territory.

Judge Harrison banged his gavel twice, silencing the murmurs in the gallery as he glared down from the elevated bench with a stern expression.

"We are here to address the emergency injunction filed by the defense regarding the disputed asset freeze of the Vanguard Group," Judge Harrison announced, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "Counsel for the defense, you may proceed."

Victoria Vance stood up, smoothing her immaculate navy blue skirt suit before stepping toward the center well of the courtroom. She was a formidable woman in her late forties with razor-sharp features and an ice-cold demeanor.

"Thank you, Your Honor," Victoria began, her voice dripping with manufactured sympathy. "My client, Mr. Julian Vanguard, has been the victim of a calculated, malicious extortion scheme orchestrated by his estranged wife, Elena. She utilized emotional manipulation, physical threats, and unauthorized data breaches to coerce him into signing fraudulent documents under duress. We have submitted sworn affidavits proving that the forty million dollars in debt was wrongfully assigned to her by third-party hackers, not my client."

A murmur rippled through the gallery. Julian sat back in his chair, offering a subtle, triumphant smirk toward Elena across the aisle.

Arthur Sterling started to rise in objection, but Elena placed a restraining hand gently on his arm. She shook her head slightly, signaling him to wait.

Judge Harrison looked down at Elena over the rim of his reading glasses. "Mrs. Vanguard, do you have any response to these serious allegations before I grant the defense's motion to lift the asset freeze?"

Elena stood up slowly, buttoning her jacket with deliberate calm. She walked to the podium without a single note or folder in her hands, her dark eyes locking directly onto the judge.

"Your Honor, the defense claims my client operated under duress," Elena said, her voice clear, resonant, and entirely steady. "I would like to submit Exhibit Delta into the permanent court record for immediate playback."

Victoria's smug expression vanished instantly, replaced by a sudden, chilling realization as Elena pulled a small silver flash drive from her pocket and placed it on the podium.
