Chapter 4 - The Closing Circle

Elena froze, her hand instinctively dropping toward the side pocket of her backpack where the burner phone rested. Marcus cursed under his breath, his fingers flying across the keyboard to initiate an emergency data wipe on the local terminal.
"They tracked your phone's GPS, didn't they?" Marcus hissed, standing up and grabbing a heavy iron wrench from the workbench.
"No, I powered the smartphone down before I left the estate," Elena whispered, her mind racing as she calculated the angles of the warehouse exits. "They must have placed a tracker on the undercarriage of my SUV when we were parked in the driveway."
Heavy boots crunched on the gravel outside, coming to a dead stop right outside the sliding metal side door. A muffled voice shouted an order, followed by the heavy metallic thud of a crowbar hitting the latch. The door groaned open, revealing two large men in tailored dark suits holding flashlights and silenced sidearms. They scanned the interior of the dim warehouse, their eyes locking instantly onto Elena and Marcus standing near the desk.
"Found them," one of the guards spoke into his shoulder radio, his voice flat and professional. "Target is securing files with an unidentified male associate. Proceeding with containment."
Elena didn't panic. Her heart hammered against her ribs, but her outward demeanor remained terrifyingly calm. She remembered every self-defense lesson her father had taught her before his mysterious death five years ago. She stepped backward into the deep shadow cast by a towering stack of wooden pallets, motioning for Marcus to stay low behind the desk.
"Mr. Julian sends his regards," the lead guard called out, stepping fully into the warehouse with his weapon raised and pointed at the floor. "Hand over the drive, Mrs. Vance, and make this easy on yourself. You're already legally dead anyway."
Marcus let out a sharp scoff, his hand hovering over the master execution key on the keyboard. "Tell Julian his shell companies are already broadcasting to the SEC database!"
The guard's eyes widened slightly in realization of the threat, and he immediately raised his pistol, aiming directly at Marcus's chest. "Drop your hands!"
In a flash of pure adrenaline, Elena kicked a heavy metal bucket across the concrete floor. The loud clatter startled the second guard, causing him to swing his flashlight and weapon toward the noise in the shadows. Taking advantage of the split-second distraction, Marcus slammed his fist down onto the enter key, triggering an automated email blast containing the encrypted master ledger to fifty high-profile investigative journalists and federal prosecutors simultaneously.

The lead guard fired, the bullet shattering a glass jar on the workbench just inches from Marcus's head. But the progress bar on the monitor hit one hundred percent. The data was gone, securely transmitted across the global network beyond recall.
