Chapter 1 - The Trap Door

"Sign the divorce and get out without a penny," Elena said, her voice dropping into a quiet, dangerous register as she sat on the plush bedroom carpet.
Julian looked down at her with a cold, mocking smirk from his position near the custom mahogany dresser.
"You have nothing of your own," Julian said, his posture rigid in his crisp white dress shirt. "We tied forty million in loans to your name. Try fighting that in court."
Chloe laughed softly from the edge of the king-sized bed, swirling her expensive red wine in a crystal glass.
"Just sign it, Elena," Chloe said, her tone dripping with casual cruelty. "You were always just a temporary placeholder in our real lives anyway."
Elena did not raise her voice. She did not scream or throw the clipboard across the room. Her bruised arms remained steady against her dark trousers as she pressed the metal pen hard into the paper, scratching her signature across the dotted line with absolute calm.
"Done," Elena said, her dark eyes locking onto Julian with an unreadable, razor-sharp focus.
"Smart girl," Julian sneered, snatching the clipboard back. "Now pack your pathetic bags and disappear before I have security throw you onto the street in the rain."
Elena stood up slowly, her movements deliberate and controlled. She grabbed her heavy black designer backpack from the armchair, turned her back on them without another word, and walked down the long, silent hallway. The glass door slid open, letting in the freezing night rain as she stepped out into the storm. She did not look back once as the heavy door clicked shut behind her, sealing her supposed defeat.
She walked straight to her sleek black SUV parked at the edge of the circular driveway. Climbing into the driver's seat, she pulled the heavy backpack tightly against her chest with both hands. Her expression shifted from quiet endurance to absolute, chilling confidence.
"Every word is on tape," Elena whispered into the darkness of the car, her gaze fixed on the glowing red recording light of the device hidden inside her jacket. "Let's see what happens to your three point two billion."

She started the engine, shifting the gear into drive as the headlights cut through the heavy downpour. She pulled away from the sprawling estate, leaving Julian and Chloe to celebrate their supposed victory in total ignorance. But as she merged onto the highway, her phone buzzed on the passenger seat with a text message from an unknown number containing a single file attachment. She tapped the screen, and her blood ran cold at the sight of Julian's hidden offshore bank statements.
