Chapter 13 - The Unclaimed Letter

The morning breeze caught the hem of Elena's white blouse as she stood frozen on the marble steps of the foundation headquarters, her eyes locked onto the mysterious figure standing beside the black sedan. It was not a reporter or a process server. It was an elderly woman with silver hair neatly pinned back, wearing a tailored vintage tweed coat that belonged to a bygone era.

The woman looked up slowly, meeting Elena's intense gaze with a gentle, sorrowful expression that instantly unlocked a flood of repressed childhood memories. It was Clara Vance, Julian's estranged maternal aunt who had mysteriously vanished from public life thirty years ago after publicly disowning the Vanguard family name for their predatory business practices.

Elena motioned for the security guards to lower their arms, stepping down the marble stairs one by one until she stood two feet away from the elderly woman.

"Clara?" Elena asked, her voice dropping to a cautious whisper. "Everyone said you passed away in Europe twenty years ago."

Clara offered a sad, tired smile, extending the heavy manila envelope toward Elena with hands that trembled slightly with age. "Julian lied about my death for the exact same reason he lied about everything else, Elena. He was terrified I would return to expose the family's original sin before he could finish consolidating his power."

Elena took the envelope, her fingers brushing against the cold, heavy wax seal stamped with the original Vanguard family crest—a crest that predated Julian's corrupt corporate empire by half a century.

"What is this?" Elena asked, her heart hammering against her ribs as she felt the rigid edges of a thick leather-bound diary hidden inside the heavy paper packaging.

"That is the true history of how my brother, Julian's grandfather, stole this company from your father's family fifty years ago," Clara said softly, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "Julian didn't just inherit an empire, Elena. He inherited a stolen dynasty built entirely on blackmail and ruin. And now, the circle has finally come back around to where it truly belongs."

Before Elena could open the envelope to examine the contents, a sharp screech of tires echoed down the quiet street as a dark, unmarked van accelerated rapidly around the corner, its headlights flashing blindingly high beams directly toward where they stood.
