Chapter 14 - Shadows in the Rearview Mirror

The unmarked van hurtled toward the foundation entrance at a reckless speed, its engine roaring like a caged beast as the tires smoked against the asphalt. Chaos erupted instantly on the marble steps as security guards drew their weapons and yelled for the press and onlookers to drop to the ground for cover.

Clara gasped, stumbling backward against the side of the black sedan, dropping her handbag onto the pavement as the heavy van swerved aggressively toward the curb.

Elena did not flinch. Drawing upon the unbreakable resolve that had carried her through the darkest hours of her trial, she grabbed Clara by the arm and yanked her safely behind the thick stone pillar flanking the grand entrance.

"Hold your fire!" the head of security shouted into his radio as the van slammed on its brakes, skidding sideways across the wet pavement ten yards away from the steps.

The side door of the van slid open with a violent metallic bang. A masked figure leaned out, pointing a heavy camera lens fitted with a long-range telephoto attachment directly toward Elena. It wasn't an assassin with a weapon. It was a private investigator hired by Julian's remaining shadow defense team, desperately trying to snap a compromising photograph of Elena accepting an unverified document on the public steps to derail the ongoing federal trial.

Before the photographer could snap the frame, three marked police cruisers swarmed the intersection from both directions with sirens screaming and emergency lights blazing, boxing the van in completely. Officers poured out of the cruisers with weapons drawn, swarming the vehicle and hauling the masked driver out onto the pavement in a matter of seconds.

Clara breathed a shaky sigh of relief, clutching the heavy wool of her coat as Elena gently steadied her shoulders.

"They are truly desperate," Clara whispered, looking down at the manila envelope still clutched safely in Elena's hands. "They know that diary destroys every legal claim Julian ever had to the foundation."

Elena opened the heavy paper flap and pulled out the ancient leather-bound diary, flipping directly to the final handwritten entry on the yellowed parchment pages. Her eyes scanned the elegant cursive script, her breath catching in her throat as she read the hidden signature scrawled at the bottom of the page.

It wasn't Julian's grandfather who had signed the document fifty years ago. It was her own grandfather, disinheriting the Vanguard family line for corporate treason decades before Julian was even born.
