Chapter 9: The Detective’s Warning

The morning fog rolled thickly off the Pacific, shrouding the coastal cottage in a dense, ghostly grey mist that muted the sound of the crashing waves. Julian stood on the front porch with a cup of black coffee in his hand, watching the gravel drive for the unmarked sedan Detective Sarah Vance had promised would arrive by eight o'clock. True to her word, a sleek dark vehicle materialized out of the fog, crunching quietly over the stones before coming to a complete stop near the base of the wooden steps.

A woman in her late thirties, dressed in a sharp charcoal trench coat with her dark hair pulled back into a practical bun, stepped out of the driver’s side. She surveyed the rustic surroundings with a sharp, analytical eye before walking steadily up the steps toward Julian.

“Mr. Julian Vance?” she asked, flashing an official badge before sliding it back into her coat pocket.

“Detective Vance,” Julian acknowledged, stepping aside to let her onto the covered porch. “Thank you for coming out on such short notice. Would you like a cup of coffee?”

“No, thank you, Mr. Vance. I prefer to keep professional visits brief,” Sarah said, leaning against the wooden railing and looking out toward the obscured ocean view. “Your digital secure packets reached our department late last night. The transaction logs you provided regarding the offshore accounts in the Caymans... they are remarkably thorough. Almost too thorough for a grieving husband.”

Julian took a slow sip of his coffee, his expression entirely unreadable. “When you spend a decade building multinational tech architecture, Detective, you learn how to track digital footprints. Elena made the fatal mistake of using our primary corporate server nodes to route her encrypted wallet keys.”

Sarah turned her gaze toward him, her eyes narrowing slightly. “Let’s be completely transparent, Mr. Vance. Financial fraud is one thing—we can freeze accounts, issue warrants, and untangle shell companies. But your wife’s legal team has already filed a preemptive counter-suit accusing you of parental abduction, psychological manipulation, and domestic intimidation.”

“On what grounds?” Julian asked, his voice dangerously low.

“On the grounds that you removed an eight-year-old child from her primary residence without formal custody modification, while threatening your own brother with physical violence,” Sarah replied smoothly. “Your brother Marcus gave a very colorful statement to local precincts late last night. He claims you assaulted him in this very cottage.”

Julian let out a cold, humorless chuckle. “Marcus is a corporate attorney protecting his own skin. He knew about the financial laundering, even if he pretended ignorance.”

May you like

“That may be, but in the eyes of the family court, an assault allegation combined with an unapproved relocation makes you look unstable,” Sarah warned, stepping closer. “If you want to win full custody of your daughter and put your wife behind bars for financial crimes, you cannot afford to play vigilante. You need to let the legal system process the evidence we are compiling, rather than hiding out on the cliffs.”

“I’m not hiding, Detective,” Julian said firmly, holding her gaze without flinching. “I am protecting my daughter from a woman who views her as a domestic servant. If the courts expect me to hand Isabelle back over to that monster while paperwork crawls at a bureaucratic snail's pace, they are profoundly mistaken.”
