Chapter 13: The Descent into the City

The morning sun clawed its way through the urban skyline of Seattle, casting long, sharp shadows across the concrete canyons of the financial district. Julian’s black sedan navigated the heavy traffic with grim precision. In the back seat, Isabelle sat buckled securely, wearing a clean, bright yellow dress that symbolized a fresh start. Her hands were still wrapped in light medical gauze, but the raw redness had begun to fade under Julian’s careful care.
As the car approached the imposing granite facade of the federal district courthouse, Julian noticed a massive swarm of media vans, camera crews, and reporters camped out near the main entrance. Elena’s theatrical television appearance had successfully turned her custody battle into a national media spectacle. Flashbulbs flickered like lightning storms against the stone pillars.
“Dad, there are so many people,” Isabelle whispered, pressing her face against the tinted glass with a hint of apprehension.
“Don’t worry about them, sweetheart,” Julian said, reaching back to squeeze her hand gently through the seat gap. “They’re just noise. We’re walking straight past them into a very safe building, and we’re going to tell the truth.”
Instead of pulling up to the chaotic main plaza, Julian navigated the vehicle down a steep ramp into the secure subterranean parking garage reserved for federal judges and law enforcement officials. The heavy steel security gate rolled shut behind them with a definitive, echoing clank, cutting off the roar of the media circus outside.
Detective Sarah Vance was waiting for them beside a private elevator bank, flanked by two armed federal marshals in dark tactical gear. Her face was set in a mask of absolute professionalism as she stepped forward to open the car door.
“Mr. Vance, Isabelle. Glad you made it,” Sarah said, offering a reassuring smile to the little girl. “Everything is in place. The federal judge is reviewing the financial indictment against Elena right now, and child services is set up in a private suite upstairs to take Isabelle’s statement without any media pressure.”
Julian stepped out of the vehicle, his tall frame rigid and alert, and helped Isabelle out of the back seat. He kept her close to his side, shielding her from the fluorescent lights and the echoing expanse of the concrete garage.
“Is Elena here?” Julian asked, his voice low and dangerous.

“She arrived twenty minutes ago, accompanied by her legal team and your brother Marcus,” Sarah replied, pressing the secure elevator call button. “They walked right into the trap, believing they were attending a private family court hearing to enforce her emergency custody writ. They have no idea we unsealed the federal wire fraud indictments fifty minutes ago.”
The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, revealing a pristine interior of brushed steel. Julian guided Isabelle inside, standing protectively in front of her as Sarah and the marshals followed closely behind. As the doors closed, cutting off the subterranean world, Julian felt the final pieces of his master plan snap firmly into place.
