Chapter 7: The Brother’s Betrayal

Marcus struggled against Julian’s grip, his face flushing with a mixture of shock and bruised corporate ego. He had always relied on his position as the younger, untouchable sibling who handled the family’s dirty legal work behind closed doors. He had never expected Julian—the calm, analytical visionary who typically avoided direct confrontation—to turn violent.

“Are you out of your mind, Julian?” Marcus choked out, his hands clawing weakly at Julian’s wrists. “Let go of me right now, or I swear I’ll have the county sheriff at your door on kidnapping charges within the hour.”

Julian held him against the wall for three more agonizing seconds, letting the raw threat sink deep into his brother’s consciousness, before releasing him with a sharp shove. Marcus stumbled backward, nearly tripping over the edge of the woven rug, and hastily straightened his lapels while glaring daggers at his older brother.

“You’ve completely lost your perspective,” Marcus muttered, adjusting his tie with shaking fingers. He picked up his leather briefcase from the dining table, clutching it like a shield. “Elena isn’t some helpless victim you can rescue from a fairy tale. She has retained top-tier counsel, and she’s already filed an emergency ex parte motion for sole custody, citing your sudden abandonment of the marital home and your erratic, aggressive behavior tonight.”

Julian didn’t flinch. He crossed his arms over his chest, maintaining an unshakeable composure that clearly unsettled Marcus even more than the physical confrontation.

“Let her file whatever motions she wants,” Julian replied coolly. “When the judge sees the medical records of Isabelle’s blistered hands, combined with the digital forensic audit of those offshore accounts she’s been draining, her emergency motion will turn into a criminal indictment.”

Marcus stopped midway toward the door, his hand hovering over the brass doorknob. He turned back slowly, his eyes narrowing as he tried to calculate whether Julian was bluffing.

“Offshore accounts?” Marcus repeated, his corporate confidence faltering for a split second. “What are you talking about?”

“Ask your dear sister-in-law about the millions missing from our joint holdings over the past eighteen months,” Julian said, stepping closer with a predatory calm. “And then ask yourself if you want to be found legally complicit as her enabler when the federal investigators start subpoenaing her wealth management firm in the Caymans.”

The color drained from Marcus’s face. He was a corporate lawyer, well-versed in civil litigation and asset protection, but he knew the moment corporate theft crossed into international wire fraud, the rules of the game changed entirely. If Elena had been laundering money through unauthorized channels, and Marcus had unknowingly signed off on related legal filings, his own license and freedom were suddenly on the line.

“You’re bluffing,” Marcus said, though his voice lacked conviction.

“Check your secure server backups tomorrow morning,” Julian replied smoothly. “Then call me back before you decide whose side you want to be on when this house of cards finally collapses.”

Marcus yanked the door open and stepped out into the dark, windy night, slamming it shut behind him with a resounding crash that echoed through the quiet cottage.
