Chapter 10: The Shadow of the Past

While Julian spoke with Detective Vance on the porch, the front door of the cottage clicked softly open. Isabelle stepped out into the chilly morning air, wearing a thick grey sweater that swallowed her small frame. She rubbed her eyes sleepily, her light brown hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders. She stopped short when she saw the stranger in the charcoal trench coat, instinctively retreating half a step back toward the safety of the interior.

Julian’s demeanor shifted instantly. The hard, calculating CEO melted away, replaced entirely by the tender, protective father. He stepped inside the doorway, kneeling down beside Isabelle and placing a comforting hand on her shoulder.

“Good morning, sweetheart,” Julian said softly, his voice warm and inviting. “This is Detective Vance. She’s a friend of mine, and she’s helping us make sure we stay safe.”

Isabelle looked at Sarah with cautious curiosity, her small fingers clutching the edge of her oversized sweater. “Are the bad people going to find us here?”

Sarah’s professional stoicism cracked slightly at the sight of the little girl. She knelt down on the wooden planks of the porch, bringing herself to eye level with Isabelle, and offered a reassuring, gentle smile.

“Nobody is going to hurt you, Isabelle,” Sarah said softly, her voice carrying a genuine warmth that put the child at ease. “Your dad is one of the bravest men I’ve ever met. And I promise you, the people who made you sad are not going to win.”

Isabelle offered a tiny, tentative nod, stepping forward just enough to show she trusted the detective’s words.

Sarah stood back up, looking past Isabelle toward Julian with a newfound understanding in her eyes. The cold suspicion she had carried up the stairs had completely dissolved. She now saw the reality of the situation: a father driven to extremes not by malice or instability, but by the desperate, primal instinct to shield his child from a sociopathic mother.

“All right, Mr. Vance,” Sarah said quietly, pulling a secure burner phone from her pocket and placing it on the small wooden table beside the door. “That is my direct encrypted line. Do not use your standard devices; Elena’s legal team has already initiated wiretaps on your corporate numbers. Give us forty-eight hours to execute the search warrants on the estate and freeze her remaining domestic accounts. Once we move in, you and Isabelle will be legally vindicated.”

“And until then?” Julian asked.

“Stay put. Lock the doors. Trust no one—not even your brother,” Sarah instructed firmly before turning and walking back toward her unmarked sedan.

As the car disappeared into the thick morning fog, Julian felt the invisible weight of a tightening noose. The countdown had begun. Within two days, the war would explode into the open, and there would be no turning back.
