Chapter 8: The Healing Touch

The heavy slam of the door left a profound silence in its wake. Julian turned around slowly, letting out a long, measured breath to release the residual adrenaline burning through his veins. He looked toward the sofa and saw Isabelle staring at him with wide, solemn eyes, pulling the woolen blanket tighter around her small frame.

Julian walked over and knelt down beside the sofa, bringing himself down to her eye level. He gently placed his hand over her bandaged fingers, making sure not to apply any pressure.

“Are you scared, sweetheart?” Julian asked softly, his voice a stark contrast to the harsh anger he had just directed at his brother.

Isabelle shook her head slowly, her light brown braids shifting against the fabric of the sofa. “I’m not scared when you’re here, Dad. But Uncle Marcus looked really mean. Is he going to take us back to Mommy?”

Julian smiled gently, brushing a stray lock of hair away from her forehead. “Nobody is taking you anywhere, Isabelle. Uncle Marcus is just a very stressed-out man who doesn’t understand what family really means. But we understand, don’t we?”

Isabelle nodded, a faint sense of security finally settling into her features. “Can we stay here forever, Dad? Just you and me?”

“We can stay here as long as we need to,” Julian promised, knowing full well that the legal war raging outside these walls would eventually demand their return to the city. But for tonight, this rustic cedar cottage at the edge of the world was an impenetrable fortress of love and protection.

Later that night, after Isabelle had drifted into a deep, dreamless sleep in the small guest bedroom, Julian sat at the wooden kitchen table with his laptop glowing softly in the dark. The screen displayed a live feed of the financial audits running through his secure satellite link. The data streams confirmed what he already suspected: Elena hadn’t just been siphoning household funds; she had been systematically liquidating assets to prepare for a clean getaway to Europe once her long-term plan for Isabelle was complete.

The depth of her sociopathy was staggering. For years, Julian had traveled the globe believing he was securing a prosperous future for his family, completely blind to the monster he had shared a bed with. The guilt threatened to crush him, but he forced it down. Guilt was useless now; only decisive action could protect his daughter.

His phone buzzed softly on the wooden table, vibrating against the grain. He picked it up and saw an unknown caller ID routed through an encrypted proxy. He swiped to answer, bringing the phone slowly to his ear.

“Speak,” Julian said coldly.

“Mr. Vance,” a crisp, professional female voice responded. “My name is Detective Sarah Vance—no relation, I assure you. I run the white-collar crime division for the state attorney’s office. We’ve been monitoring unusual capital flight from several high-net-worth accounts tied to your family name. We need to schedule an interview regarding Mrs. Elena Vance’s financial activities.”

Julian stared out the dark window at the churning black ocean below. The pieces were falling into place faster than even he had anticipated.
