Chapter 8: The Weight of Inheritance

Julian’s words hung in the air like a sentence handed down by a judge. Sara looked deep into his eyes, searching for the warmth and understanding that had once drawn her to him, but she found only the cold, unyielding ambition of the Vance dynasty. He had chosen his inheritance, his status, and his mother over the truth.

""You really believe I attacked her, don't you, Julian?"" Sara asked, her voice dangerously quiet.

Julian looked away for a fraction of a second, a micro-expression of doubt flashing across his sharp features before he locked his emotions down once more. ""The evidence speaks for itself, Sara. The cameras don't lie. My mother is an elderly woman with a bleeding face. What else am I supposed to think?""

""You could trust me,"" Sara said, the words tasting like ash in her mouth. ""After five years together, you could have asked me for my side of the story instead of locking me away like a criminal.""

""We are talking about the Vance family reputation,"" Julian snapped, his voice rising slightly before he checked himself, lowering it back to a controlled hiss. ""My mother built this empire from the ground up after my father died. She doesn't deserve to be humiliated by a sudden, violent outburst from someone she welcomed into our home.""

Sara let out a bitter, humorless laugh. ""Welcomed? I was a convenient asset, Julian. Just like the prenuptial agreements, just like the corporate mergers, and just like this guesthouse exile.""

Before Julian could respond, a soft rustle came from the direction of the back pantry. Julian’s head snapped toward the sound. ""Who’s here?"" he demanded, taking a sharp step forward.

""Nobody,"" Sara said quickly, stepping into his path to block his view of the pantry door. ""Just the wind rattling the old window frames.""

Julian’s eyes narrowed. He looked past her shoulder, noticing the faint outline of the wicker basket Marcus had left earlier, and then downward to where the edge of the leather briefcase peeked out from beneath the sofa fringe. His face paled, the realization dawning on him with terrifying speed. He dropped to one knee, pulled the heavy leather case out from under the sofa, and snapped open the brass latches.

The silence in the room became absolute. Julian’s hands trembled as he lifted the top document—the financial audit showing the millions funneled into Arthur Hayes’s offshore trust. He turned the page slowly, his eyes scanning Beatrice’s handwritten directives regarding the setup and the wedding to the Sterling family. Every trace of color drained from his face.
