Chapter 10: The Midnight Escape

The fog rolled heavily over the Vance estate, swallowing the manicured lawns and towering oak trees in a thick, gray shroud. Inside the guesthouse, the atmosphere crackled with quiet urgency. Marcus emerged from the pantry, wiping sweat from his forehead, while Julian methodically organized the stolen documents back into the leather briefcase.

""The night guard on the eastern perimeter takes his smoke break at precisely two-fifteen,"" Marcus whispered, holding a pair of heavy wire cutters. ""We have a four-minute window to slip through the service gate before the patrol car loops back around.""

Sara pulled on a dark wool coat, tying her hair back securely. The scratch on her cheek still throbbed faintly, a constant reminder of the violence that had started this downward spiral. She looked at Julian, seeing a man fundamentally altered from the arrogant corporate heir who had shouted at her in the banquet hall just days ago. The trauma of betrayal had stripped away his armor, leaving behind a sharp, focused ally.

""Let's move,"" Julian said, checking the silenced tactical flashlight he had retrieved from his car trunk.

They slipped out the back door of the guesthouse, the damp night air biting at their skin. Moving in absolute silence, they hugged the shadows of the high stone garden wall until they reached the rusted service gate. Marcus snipe the padlock with expert precision, the metal snapping with a muffled pop. One by one, they squeezed through the opening into the dense pine forest bordering the estate, leaving the gilded cage behind them.

A black sedan borrowed from Marcus’s cousin sat waiting on the narrow gravel access road. Julian slid into the driver’s seat, tossing the briefcase onto the passenger floorboard, while Sara and Marcus took the back. The engine roared to life with a quiet purr, and they sped away into the winding mountain roads leading toward downtown.

As they drove through the sleeping suburbs, Sara stared out the window at the flashing streetlights. She knew that reaching downtown headquarters was only the first step. Arthur Hayes was a seasoned predator who had spent decades burying corporate bodies in paperwork and legal loopholes. Taking him down would require more than stolen documents; it would require absolute precision and a willingness to burn the Vance empire to the ground.

""Once we access the central terminal, we bypass the firewall using my executive override code,"" Julian said, his eyes locked on the dark winding road ahead. ""Hayes won't see it coming until his accounts are frozen and the federal auditors receive the encrypted files.""
