Chapter 12: The Trap Springs Open

Before Julian could click on the financial ledger to initiate the account freeze, the office speakers chimed with a soft, melodic beep. The overhead intercom crackled to life, and the smooth, unmistakable voice of Beatrice Vance filled the silent room.

""How predictable, my dear son,"" Beatrice’s voice echoed, cold and utterly composed, as if she were reading a bedtime story rather than confronting trespassers. ""Did you truly believe Arthur and I wouldn't anticipate your little midnight heist?""

Julian froze, his hands hovering over the keyboard. Sara spun around, her eyes darting toward the security camera mounted in the corner of the ceiling. The green recording light, which had been dark moments ago, was now glowing a bright, steady crimson.

""Mom,"" Julian shouted, standing up from the desk. ""It's over! We have the audit reports. We know about the offshore accounts and the setup at the banquet!""

""You know nothing, Julian,"" Beatrice replied smoothly from the intercom. ""You were raised to inherit an empire, not to question its foundations. Arthur invested decades into building the Vance wealth. A temporary alliance with the Sterling family was simply the logical next step to secure our dominance for the next generation. And as for Sara... well, she was always a liability. Too soft, too observant, and entirely unsuited for the realities of our world.""

""You framed her,"" Julian snarled, his voice trembling with fury. ""You had Arthur scratch her face and yours to manufacture a false narrative!""

""I did what was necessary,"" Beatrice’s voice remained chillingly calm. ""And by the time security escorts you both out of this building, the federal authorities will have already received an anonymous tip regarding a massive corporate data theft originating from your terminal, Julian. You won't just lose your inheritance; you'll lose your freedom.""

Suddenly, the heavy double doors of the office swung inward. Arthur Hayes stood in the doorway, impeccably dressed in a charcoal suit, a thin white bandage matching the one on Beatrice’s cheek, flanked by four towering private security guards in full tactical gear. Hayes offered a thin, polite smile, his eyes devoid of any remorse.

""Good morning, Mr. Vance. Miss Sara,"" Hayes said smoothly, stepping into the room. ""I’m afraid your access session has expired.""
