Chapter 13: The Final Gambit

Arthur Hayes gestured subtly to the security guards, who advanced into the office with heavy, calculated strides, their hands resting on their tactical utility belts. Julian stepped in front of Sara defensively, his jaw set in a hard line. ""You're too late, Hayes,"" Julian bluffed, though his heart hammered against his ribs. ""The encrypted files have already been automatically uploaded to the federal oversight committee's secure server.""

Hayes’s polite smile faltered for just a fraction of a second—a micro-expression of genuine uncertainty that did not escape Sara’s sharp eyes. The lawyer stepped closer to the desk, his eyes darting toward the glowing monitor where the financial ledger remained half-open. ""You’re bluffing, Julian. You never had enough time to execute a full data transfer.""

""He didn't need to,"" a calm, weathered voice echoed from the doorway behind the security guards.

Arthur Hayes and the guards spun around in surprise. Marcus stepped out from the hallway shadows, holding a heavy industrial fire extinguisher in one hand and a portable broadcast transmitter in the other. Before the guards could react, Marcus slammed the base of the fire extinguisher against the glass partition of the hallway fire alarm box, shattering the red safety glass and depressing the master alert button.

The entire fifty-fifth floor erupted into a deafening shriek of emergency sirens. Strobe lights flashed brilliant red against the glass walls, and the automated fire suppression vents in the ceiling hissed loudly, filling the room with a thick, harmless white mist. Panic rippled through the security guards as standard emergency protocols overrode the building’s internal network, unlocking every digital door and broadcasting live audio feeds directly to the municipal emergency services server downstairs.

""The building's public safety override is active,"" Marcus shouted over the screaming sirens, holding up the broadcast transmitter. ""Every word that just came over the intercom from Mrs. Vance has been recorded and transmitted directly to the district attorney’s active corruption hotline!""

Arthur Hayes lunged forward in a desperate attempt to grab the transmitter from Marcus, but Julian intercepted him with a vicious, perfectly executed tackle, driving the lawyer hard against the mahogany conference table. The briefcase slid off the edge, scattering the audit papers across the floor as the heavy brass latches burst open.

Sara moved with lightning speed, grabbing the primary workstation keyboard and hitting the enter key to finalize the account freeze just as the system locked down under the emergency protocol. On the screen, a bold green banner flashed: *Accounts Successfully Frozen. Federal Audit Initiated.*
