Chapter 7: The Confrontation in the Dark

The weight of the documents felt suffocating as Sara clutched the yellow legal pad against her chest. Marcus stood by the door, his eyes darting anxiously toward the main house lights flickering in the distance. ""You need to show these to Mr. Julian immediately, Miss Sara,"" the old gardener urged, adjusting his cap. ""He might be blind when it comes to his mother, but he loves you. He won't stand for this if he sees the physical proof.""

Sara shook her head slowly, a bitter smile touching her lips. ""Julian doesn't want to see the truth, Marcus. He wants a quiet life that aligns with his mother's ambitions. If I walk into the main manor with stolen documents, they will simply claim I broke in and fabricated them.""

""Then what are we going to do? We can't stay here hiding forever,"" Marcus whispered.

Before Sara could answer, the heavy crunch of gravel outside signaled an approaching vehicle. Headlights swept across the guesthouse windows, painting the walls in a harsh, glaring white. The engine cut off instantly, followed by the heavy thud of a car door slamming shut. Heavy, purposeful footsteps marched up the wooden steps of the porch.

""Hide the briefcase!"" Marcus hissed, darting toward the back pantry.

Sara shoved the documents back into the leather case and slid it under the sofa just as the front door handle jiggled. The lock clicked, and the heavy oak door swung open. Julian stood in the threshold, his blue suit jacket rumpled, his white shirt collar unbuttoned. His expression was cold, tired, and guarded. He stepped into the room, his eyes scanning the space before landing squarely on Sara, who stood frozen by the dining table.

""What were you doing with the lights out?"" Julian asked, his voice flat and detached.

""Trying to find some peace in a house that has suddenly become a prison,"" Sara replied steadily, forcing her hands not to shake.

Julian sighed, rubbing the bridge of his nose in exhaustion. ""My mother is worried about you, Sara. She wants to drop the matter if you sign an agreement to spend the next six months at a wellness retreat upstate. No scandal, no police, just... a quiet departure.""

Sara stared at the man she had planned to marry, feeling a profound wave of grief wash over her. He wasn't just blind to his mother’s manipulation; he was actively participating in it to protect the Vance family name. ""A wellness retreat,"" Sara repeated softly. ""Or a cage where I can never tell anyone what really happened in that banquet hall?""

Julian stepped closer, his jaw tightening. ""Don't make this harder than it has to be, Sara. You don't have a choice.""
