Chapter 6: The Utility Shed Heist

The wind howled through the sprawling branches of the oak trees, casting wild, dancing shadows across the lawn as midnight approached. Sara paced the length of the guesthouse living room, her eyes fixed on the analog clock ticking loudly on the mantelpiece. Marcus was taking too long. Every passing minute increased the risk that the old gardener would be caught trespassing near the main service areas, pulling them both deeper into a dangerous web of conspiracy.
Suddenly, a sharp rap echoed against the back window. Sara rushed over and slid the glass pane open just enough to see Marcus standing in the darkness, breathing heavily, clutching a worn leather briefcase against his chest. His face was pale, and a thin scrape bled slightly near his eyebrow.
""Did anyone see you?"" Sara whispered urgently, reaching out to pull the heavy briefcase through the opening.
""The night patrol changed shifts early,"" Marcus gasped, leaning against the stone wall to catch his breath. ""I had to hide under the floorboards of the tractor barn for twenty minutes. But I got it. The combination lock was old-fashioned. I managed to force it open with a pry bar.""
Sara pulled the briefcase onto the dining table, snapping open the brass latches. Inside lay a neat stack of legal documents, bank statements, and a folded manila folder labeled simply: *Project Inheritance - Contingency B*. Her hands trembled as she lifted the heavy cardstock cover. Inside were detailed financial audits of the Vance estate, showing that Beatrice Vance had been secretly transferring millions of dollars into an offshore trust controlled entirely by Arthur Hayes. But even more shocking was a series of printed photographs taken weeks before the banquet—photographs of Sara walking alone in the garden, annotated with clinical notes detailing her daily routines, her reactions to stress, and her exact blind spots.
""They planned this months ago,"" Sara whispered, staring at the pages in absolute horror. ""The banquet was just the stage. They needed a reason to declare me mentally unstable so I couldn't contest the prenuptial amendments.""
""There's more,"" Marcus said, pointing a shaking finger at a folded sheet of yellow legal pad paper at the bottom of the briefcase. ""Read the memo at the bottom, Miss Sara. It's written in Mrs. Vance’s own handwriting.""

Sara unfolded the yellow paper. The elegant, looping cursive of Beatrice Vance spelled out a chilling directive: *Once the girl is discredited and isolated in the guesthouse, Julian will naturally seek solace in the merger with the Sterling family. The wedding must proceed by autumn. Ensure the scratch on her face mirrors Arthur's so the narrative of a mutual altercation holds weight.*
The truth slammed into Sara like a physical blow. The scratch on her own cheek hadn't been an accident or a stray glass shard; Arthur Hayes had deliberately grazed her face with a ring blade in the dim lighting just moments before the chaos erupted, matching the injury he had sustained during their setup. They had used her own body as a canvas for their conspiracy.
