Chapter 12: A Lesson in Honor

In a quiet classroom inside the newly finished wing of the center, Julian sat at a small wooden desk opposite Leo. On the table between them sat an old chess set with carved wooden pieces.

"You're leaving your king exposed," Julian noted gently, pointing to a bishop on the board.

Leo looked closely at the board, then touched his knight. "If I move here, I protect the pawn."

"That's true," Julian smiled, leaning back. "But sometimes you have to lose a pawn to protect the whole position. You have to think three moves ahead."

"My dad used to play chess?" Leo asked, his voice innocent and quiet.

Julian paused, the warmth in his face softening into a reflective stillness. "Your dad was better than me at this game, Leo. Because he played to enjoy it, not just to win."

Julian reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the old faded photograph—the one showing a young Jax holding a tiny baby outside the old diner. Next to it, he laid a second, brand-new photo: Leo standing between Julian, Victoria, and Jax at the ground-breaking ceremony.

"Keep them together," Julian said softly, placing both photos in Leo's hands. "So you always know where you came from, and who stands behind you."
