Chapter 10: The Reckoning

The following morning, a press conference was called at the steps of City Hall. Reporters gathered under a gray sky, camera flashes cutting through the chill air.

Julian walked up to the podium alone. He wore a simple navy suit, free of the ostentatious cufflinks and lapel pins he usually favored. Behind him stood Victoria, Jax, and young Leo, holding Sarah’s hand.

Julian adjusted the microphone. He looked out at the sea of faces, then down at the prepared speech in his hands. After a long silence, he folded the paper in half and placed it in his pocket.

"For ten years," Julian began, his voice clear and resonant, "I told this city that progress required sacrifice. I told myself that success justified the means. I was wrong."

The crowd rustled with surprise. Cameras flashed furiously.

"Effective immediately," Julian continued, "Vanguard Enterprises is relinquishing all commercial development rights in the Eastern District. The land and all associated assets will be permanently transferred to the Lumen Foundation, governed by a board of local residents. My personal shares will be placed in an irrevocable trust for the education and welfare of the children of this community."

He looked back briefly at Leo, whose big hazel eyes watched him with quiet curiosity.

"It is time to build something that lasts," Julian concluded softly.
