Chapter 1: The Echo of Glass

The grand ballroom had not quieted, but to Julian, the music suddenly sounded like it was playing underwater. Victoria stood less than two feet away from him, her black sequined gown catching the light of the crystal chandeliers. To anyone else, she was simply a composed, breathtaking woman adjusting her phone. But Julian saw the tiny, controlled rhythm of her breathing, the precise way her pulse fluttered against her throat, right beneath the faint, crimson streak on her neck.

"Victoria," Julian said, his signature confident smile flickering for a fraction of a second before locking back into place. "You look like you've seen a ghost."

Victoria lowered her phone slowly. Her hazel eyes did not flash with anger; instead, they were completely still, like frozen water over a deep current. "Not a ghost, Julian. Just the reflection of a very long night."

Around them, high-society guests clinked champagne flutes. Laughter bounced off the gilded ceiling. Julian took a step closer, lowering his voice into that smooth, persuasive register that had secured his position in the city's highest circles. "The contracts are signed. The board voted ninety percent in favor. In less than an hour, the press release goes live. Whatever small fires you think you're putting out upstairs, they don't matter anymore."

Victoria offered a faint, almost imperceptible tilt of her head. "A fire only matters when you realize what's burning, Julian. You think you bought a company tonight."

"I bought an empire," Julian corrected softly, his eyes narrowing slightly.

May you like

"No," Victoria murmured, her voice steady enough to cut through the surrounding orchestra. "You bought a vault with no key."

She turned on her heel and walked away, her steps deliberate and unhurried. Julian watched her back disappear into the crowd. For the first time in ten years, his hands felt strangely heavy around his crystal glass.
