Chapter 8 - The Terminal

“You can’t outcode a federal subpoena, Dr. Sterling, because the data packet is already encrypted and transmitting across three independent satellite relays!” Maya shouted toward the open stairwell, her fingers dancing across the mechanical keyboard to lock down the master mainframe protocol.

Dean Sterling stepped out onto the landing overlooking the sub-basement, his clothes damp from the chemical retardant, his face twisted into an expression of absolute, desperate fury. Behind him stood the two guards, their weapons drawn and leveled directly at the oak desk where Maya and Bryce stood trembling in the harsh green glow of the monitor.

“You have no idea what you’ve just done, girl,” Sterling snarled, taking a slow, deliberate step down the metal stairs, his boots clanging loudly against the rungs. “That data contains classified defense contracts that will plunge the university into financial ruin and land half the federal oversight board in maximum security. We built this institution from the ground up, and you’re going to hand over the decryption key right now, or your little friend here takes the first bullet.”

The guard on the left raised his weapon higher, laser sight painting a bright red dot squarely against the center of Bryce’s varsity jacket. Bryce let out a choked gasp, his knees buckling slightly as he clutched the heavy metallic case to his chest like a shield, tears of pure terror welling in his eyes.

“Maya, give it to them! Just give them the key, I don’t want to die over some stupid database!” Bryce cried out, his voice cracking with raw, unadulterated panic as he looked pleadingly at her face.

Maya didn’t look at Bryce; her eyes remained fixed on the glowing green monitor, watching the upload progress bar tick upward from eighty-eight percent to ninety-one percent. She knew that the moment the progress bar hit one hundred percent, the data would be distributed across thousands of public nodes, making it impossible for the university administration or their corporate handlers to ever scrub or suppress it again.

“Just three more percent, Bryce, hold it together for three more percent,” Maya muttered under her breath, her own hands shaking slightly as she entered the final checksum verification string into the terminal command line.

Sterling raised his hand, signaling the guard to tighten his grip on the trigger as he reached the bottom of the stairs, closing the distance between them with terrifying speed. “Shoot him in the leg,” Sterling ordered coldly, his patience completely exhausted. “Then take the drive from the terminal by force.”

The guard’s finger tightened on the trigger, a sharp metallic click echoing through the cavernous sub-basement just as the monitor screen flashed a brilliant, blinding emerald green.
