Chapter 10 - The Sirens

The wail of approaching police sirens echoed sharply across the quiet campus quadrangle, cutting through the crisp night air as red and blue emergency lights flashed against the gothic brick facades of the university buildings. Maya and Bryce tumbled out of the rusted ground-level vent, landing hard on the manicured lawn and gasping for clean oxygen after the stagnant air of the sub-basement. Bryce collapsed onto his back, staring up at the clear night sky with wide, unblinking eyes while clutching his torn varsity jacket tightly around his chest.

“We... we actually made it out,” Bryce breathed out, his voice trembling as he wiped a smudge of soot and dirt from his forehead. “Maya, I am so sorry for everything. I was an idiot, a complete idiot who just wanted to fit in with the wrong crowd.”

Maya didn’t answer immediately; she sat up on her knees, pressing the heavy metallic case tightly against her chest while checking the encrypted pocket drive she had managed to rip from the sub-basement terminal before fleeing. The red LED light on the drive blinked a steady, reassuring green, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that the files were safe and already in the hands of federal investigators.

“An idiot who nearly got us both killed for a social media prank, Bryce,” Maya said coldly, finally turning her gaze down to look at him with unyielding severity. “You need to understand that this goes way beyond campus politics or stupid dorm dares; people like Dean Sterling treat students like disposable assets.”

Before Bryce could reply, the heavy oak doors of the main administrative building burst open behind them, and Dean Sterling emerged onto the steps flanked by campus security and the two guards in dark jackets. Sterling spotted them instantly across the lawn, his expression contorting with rage as he pointed a finger directly at Maya and shouted for campus security to intercept them.

“There they are! Stop those students, they’ve stolen classified university property!” Sterling yelled, jogging down the steps with desperate urgency as two uniformed security officers rushed across the grass toward the quad.

The flashing lights of three unmarked federal cruisers suddenly swept into the quadrangle from the main access road, their tires screeching as they cut off the security officers’ path. The doors flew open, and federal agents in dark tactical windbreakers deployed quickly, swarming the steps of the administration building and placing Dean Sterling and his guards in handcuffs within seconds.

Special Agent Vance—a tall, sharp-featured woman with deep dark hair and an expression of grim determination—stepped out of the lead cruiser and walked straight toward Maya and Bryce across the lawn. Maya stood up slowly, clutching the metallic case and holding her head high as the agent stopped just a few feet away, her eyes softening with a deep, personal recognition.

“Dr. Vance’s daughter, I presume?” Agent Vance asked quietly, flashing an official federal badge before looking down at the drive in Maya’s hands. “We received the complete data packet five minutes ago; your father’s work wasn't in vain.”

Maya felt a heavy weight lift from her shoulders for the first time in five years, but as Agent Vance reached out to take the drive, a sharp, piercing notification tone suddenly pinged from Maya’s recovered smartphone.
