Chapter 3 - The Blackout

The sudden pitch blackness inside the server room was absolute, swallowing the blue and green LED lights and leaving Maya in a disorienting, freezing void. The only illumination came from the faint red glow of the digital countdown timer outside the glass door, casting long, eerie shadows across the massive metallic racks. Maya froze, her hand hovering just millimeters above the terminal keyboard where she had been executing the root override command. The synthesized voice that had echoed from the ceiling vents hadn't sounded like automated facility software; it had carried a deliberate, human cadence, chilling her spine far more effectively than the dropping ambient temperature.
“Access denied, Maya,” the mechanical voice whispered again through the directional speakers, lingering in the heavy air like a physical presence. “You’re digging through archives that were permanently sealed before you were even admitted to this institution.”
Her heart hammered against her ribs, but she forced her breathing to steady, refusing to give the hidden observer the satisfaction of panic. Her fingers slid blindly across the mechanical keys, searching for the hardware reset toggle that would force the backup generators to kick in manually. If she could just restore auxiliary power to the terminal, she could trace the audio feed back to its exact speaker channel and expose whoever was operating the campus intercom system.
Outside the heavy door, the hallway remained silent, suggesting that Bryce, Mark, and Chloe had already walked away toward the elevators, completely deaf to the strange anomalies occurring inside the mainframe. They had left her here to shiver and learn her lesson, ignorant of the fact that the entire building’s security grid was currently being re-routed by an unknown third party. Maya realized with a sinking dread that the prank had never been about social media clout or putting her in her place; it had been a carefully orchestrated trap designed to get her physically inside this specific room while the campus network was vulnerable.
Her thumb found the hardware toggle and she flipped it upward with a sharp click, flooding the server room with blinding white emergency strobe lights. The sudden illumination revealed something terrifying that had been hidden in the darkness: a fresh set of muddy footprints leading directly from the maintenance hatch in the back wall toward her current position. The heavy metal hatch, which was supposed to be welded shut from the outside, hung slightly ajar, letting in a gust of damp, freezing wind that didn't match the building’s ventilation system.
Maya slowly stood up from the terminal chair, her muscles aching from the cold as she backed away from the open hatch, her eyes scanning the towering server racks for any sign of movement. The digital timer on the front door now read twenty-four minutes, meaning she had less than half a hour before Bryce and his friends were scheduled to return and open the door—assuming whoever was in the room with her didn't decide to permanently silence her first.
She reached into the pocket of her grey hoodie, her fingers wrapping around her smartphone, only to find the screen completely dead, fried by an electromagnetic pulse triggered when the server lights had gone out. She was entirely cut off from the outside world, armed with nothing more than her intellect and a freezing environment that was rapidly sapping her physical strength.

A heavy footstep echoed softly from the aisle directly behind her, followed by the distinct sound of a metal lighter snapping open in the dark.
