Chapter 14 - The Rooftop

The rusted maintenance grate screeched softly as Maya hauled it open, leading them down into the cool, concrete-lined utility tunnel that ran directly beneath the campus quad toward the central administration building. The air inside was damp and smelled faintly of ozone and old dust, but the path ahead was clear, illuminated only by the faint green glow of Maya’s smartphone screen as she checked the facility blueprint map.

“Keep close, the maintenance ladder at the end of this tunnel leads straight up into the rooftop utility penthouse right below the satellite uplink dish,” Maya whispered back over her shoulder, her boots splashing softly against the shallow puddles on the concrete floor.

Bryce followed closely behind her, his breathing steady now, replaced by a grim focus that had been completely absent when this entire nightmare began. Agent Vance brought up the rear, her tactical tablet pinging softly as she monitored the approaching countdown timer displayed on her screen.

“We have five minutes before the board’s automated security protocols initiate a secondary frequency sweep of the entire rooftop sector,” Agent Vance warned quietly, her voice echoing off the damp tunnel walls. “If we aren't plugged into the uplink by then, our transmission signal will be permanently blocked.”
