Chapter 1 - The Switch

“This wasn’t the deal, Bryce! You said we were just going to test the cooling backup, not lock me in a literal industrial freezer with zero notice!” Maya’s voice cut through the hum of the server racks, sharp and trembling with a sudden spike of adrenaline as her dark hair fell across her face inside the grey hoodie.
Bryce stood on the other side of the heavy steel door, his varsity jacket with the white ‘N’ letter catching the cold blue overhead glow. He offered a tight, dismissive smirk, leaning back against the frame while their two friends, Mark and Chloe, kept their phones raised, recording every second of the confrontation for their campus clout.
“Relax, Maya, it’s just a prank for the algorithm, and the timer is set for thirty minutes max,” Bryce shot back, crossing his arms over his chest with an irritating lack of empathy. “You’re always acting like you own the campus coding lab anyway, so consider this your ultimate performance review.”
“Are you out of your mind? My laptop is out here, my jacket is too light for sub-zero temperatures, and the manual override latch is completely missing from this side!” Maya stepped closer to the thick glass window, her breath already pluming into visible white wisps in the artificial frost. “Open this door right now, Bryce, or I swear I am wiping the main database before you even finish uploading this.”
“Try it, genius, because the network port in there is completely severed,” Mark chimed in from behind Bryce, laughing nervously as he adjusted his own grey hoodie under the harsh facility lighting. “You’re offline, you’re trapped, and the clock is ticking down whether you like it or not.”
Bryce reached up and slammed the heavy vault door shut with a loud, echoing metallic thud, leaving Maya standing alone in the freezing dark.
Outside, the digital countdown timer glowed an unforgiving red, clicking down from twenty-nine minutes as Bryce turned away, entirely unaware of what the ceiling security camera was about to reveal.
On the small monitor mounted near the ceiling, the friends watched Maya spin around in sudden confusion, but her expression shifted instantly from panic to a chilling, deadpan calm as she looked straight up into the lens.

“Wait... is that Bryce?” Maya whispered aloud into the empty server room, her voice carrying through the hidden internal intercom.
