Chapter 13 - The Ultimatum

“Freeze! Federal agent, do not move another inch!” Agent Vance commanded sharply, stepping toward the doorway, but the figure in the maintenance uniform merely raised a hand in a casual farewell gesture and rounded the corner into the stairwell.

Agent Vance pursued the intruder into the hallway, but by the time she reached the top of the metal stairs, the heavy fire door was swinging shut with a dull echo, and the stairwell below was completely empty. She returned to the dorm room, her expression grim as she picked up the silver flash drive resting on Bryce’s unmade bed and plugged it directly into her tactical tablet for analysis.

“It’s not a wipe script,” Agent Vance muttered, watching the file directory populate across her screen with thousands of nested sub-folders. “It’s a complete ledger of every financial transaction, blackmail memo, and biometric compliance record the university board has accumulated over the past decade.”

Maya walked over to the desk, peering down at the tablet display as the primary index file loaded, revealing her father’s name right at the very top of the executive sign-off sheet. Her breath hitched as she read the digital signature date—dated just forty-eight hours before his supposed laboratory accident five years ago.

“He didn’t die in an accident,” Maya whispered, her voice cracking slightly as the full weight of the conspiracy settled over her shoulders. “He refused to sign the compliance waiver, and they staged his disappearance to take control of the legacy mainframe.”

Bryce looked up from the bed, his face pale and etched with genuine remorse as he stared at the screen displaying the names of dozens of students whose lives had been quietly manipulated by the board’s behavioral experiments. “What do we do now, Maya? If they have this much power over the university, how do we stop them for good?”

“We don’t stop them by playing their game in the server rooms,” Maya replied, her eyes hardening with fierce resolve as she snatched the silver flash drive from the tablet port. “We take this ledger directly to the national press and broadcast every single byte of data live across the national network before they can scrub the regional repeaters.”

Agent Vance nodded in grim agreement, securing her tactical gear and tapping her shoulder radio to establish a secure satellite uplink to the federal press bureau. “I can authorize a priority emergency broadcast through the federal secure channel, but we have to reach the primary satellite uplink dish located on the roof of the central administration building within the next fifteen minutes.”

“That’s the building with the automated quarantine shutters and the active security lockdown,” Bryce pointed out, his voice tinged with lingering panic. “How are we supposed to get back inside without triggering another system trap?”

“Because we’re not going in through the front doors,” Maya said, grabbing her jacket and heading toward the door with absolute determination. “We’re going through the maintenance tunnels my father built specifically to bypass the board’s digital perimeter.”

They rushed out of the dorm room into the quiet campus night, heading toward the rusted grate behind the science hall, unaware that a drone was hovering silently fifty feet above them, tracking their every movement with an unblinking infrared camera.
